FLASHBACK: DeSantis Admits SLOWER COVID Reopening Than Trump White House Suggested

Governor of Florida Ron DeSantis admitted that it took him longer to fully re-open the state of Florida than former President Donald Trump recommended during the COVID-19 pandemic, archive video from the Governor’s social media has revealed.

Last month, DeSantis attacked Trump’s record on COVID after the former President called the Governor of Florida’s pandemic response “average.” However, at the height of the pandemic in 2020, DeSantis accepted that he didn’t listen to the White House’s advice, keeping Florida closed for longer than was necessary.

“When we announced phase one, we followed the White House’s guidelines, but we didn’t even do everything they said we could do in Phase 1… so it was a limited Phase 1, it was a safe Phase 1, it was a smart step, but it was done step by step,” DeSantis argued.

Phase 1 meant that restaurants, barber shops, and retail stores, among others, could only open to 50 percent capacity.

Indeed, Florida was one of the later Republican states to lift lockdown restrictions. In fact, Mississippi, Tennessee, Alaska, Georgia, Oklahoma, Alabama, Indiana, Montana, South Carolina, and Texas all began opening up before DeSantis’s home state.

From your link: Florida is among the leading states opening up!

It joins 16 other states - mostly in the South and Midwest - which have lifted or announced dates to lift coronavirus restrictions following weeks of mandatory lockdowns
Alabama, Ohio, Missouri, Montana and Iowa will slowly start opening their economies this week
Minnesota, Mississippi, Michigan, Tennessee, Colorado, Alaska, Georgia, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Texas have already partially reopened

DeSantis was still an early state overall. Most Floridians I have talked to said the lock down didn’t really affect them, so it was done lightly.

I don’t hold anybody responsible for any mistakes that were made if the mistake was based on good advice.

This is not an issue for me about DeSantis. I’m more concerned about him lifting tariffs from China than this.

So you have no issue with DeSantis making an issue out of this with Trump?

I have no issues with DeSantis disagreeing with Trump, if the reason why he disagrees with him can stand on its own merits.

I believe how DeSantis handled covid was done pretty well. His lockdown was lightly done, as told to me by Floridians, and he was an early state for lifting the lockdowns. That’s why covid for him is a non-issue for me.

However, I’m more concerned about him wanting to lift the China tariffs. America became a little more self-sufficient under Trump and that was a good thing.

Funny i only remember trump attacking him for the student spring break and stuff. And it is not worthy that Trumps attacks as so relentless that does it skew what you really remember about the events. MY retrospective was that Desantis knew more than Trump and had better advisers than Trump and acted cautiously to keep his state moving. All i remember about Trump was his accusing Desantis of opening up too soon. and I even think Kemp attacked Desantis for that. Also i heard today an interview with Trump where he doesn’t know the vaccine is not effective and would not admit it.. The execution of creating the “vax” was tremendous if it only was a real vaccine that helped people. But he still thinks the execution of his producing the “vax” is more important than the efficaciousness of the actual drug/therapy. After hearing his explanation i decided that i won’t vote for him in the primary. The guy really has a discernment issue.

Mis-information? Florida never closed. So how could it be slow to reopen?

It absolutely closed! I lived through it. The first thing that really opened were the beaches because it was spring break and Florida depends on the revenue.

Trump made it an issue by saying Florida’s death rate was worse than New York’s. He used raw numbers instead of adjusted numbers of population and age as a deliberate deception. DeSantis responded, as he should have. During the pandemic, Trump was all praise about DeSantis’ handling of the virus. Now he’s just an insecure hypocrite trying to destroy a primary rival who is umpteen points behind in the polls instead of focusing on target-rich Biden.

In Florida, the governor left much of the pandemic closing decisions to the counties. He only closed the 3 most popular Spring Break beaches but didn’t throw people into jail for going there anyway. The other beaches were left up to the locals.

He never required the public to wear masks, unlike many other states. He even signed executive orders to combat the overreach of some of the counties and businesses that were causing people to lose their jobs if they didn’t get jabbed.

I also lived through it here in Florida.

Counties, cities (mostly the population-dense ones) and businesses could require masks, but the State of Florida did not require statewide masking as per several articles I’ve read, some from anti-Republican/conservative sites like CBS.
