Alameda County Superior Court judge robbed at gunpoint on way to court

OAKLAND, Calif. - An Alameda County Superior Court judge was robbed at gunpoint while walking to work at a courthouse in Oakland on Thursday.

Judge Kevin Murphy was starting his day when he was robbed by three masked men of his Rolex watch, wallet and other personal items at gunpoint, the Alameda County Sheriff's Office announced on Thursday.

Murphy was walking from a parking garage to the René C. Davidson Courthouse building, which sits near Lake Merritt, when he was robbed, a source said.

I wonder: Will the good judge now be morally obligated to recuse himself from any future cases involving armed robbery?

The judge could recuse himself if in his assessment his reaction to becoming a crime victim induced bias or prejudice. Recusal (or, more correctly, disqualification) though likely would not be required unless the specific robbers were determined and came in front of him for that or another crime.

Parking garage at 13th and Madison, probably Alco Park. Just before 9 a.m.

It’s not a BAD neighborhood — it has the public library and a few gov’t buildings — but it’s a good idea to keep your head on a swivel in those surroundings.

It’s also half a block from the McDonald’s at 14th and Jackson, so I suppose the thieves had already enjoyed their morning coffee and were energized for the day’s work.

Out of curiosity, I just looked it up. The cheapest new Rolex costs around $5000. I am amazed by that, as I would have guessed around $500. Anyway, my old $15 Timex watch has taken a licking, but keeps on ticking.

So I don’t think I’ll be trading it in for a Rolex.
