JACKSON, Miss. -- A transgender girl in Mississippi is not participating in her high school graduation ceremony because school officials told her to dress like a boy and a federal judge did not block the officials' decision, an attorney for the girl's family said Saturday.
Linda Morris, staff attorney at the American Civil Liberties Union's Women’s Rights Project, said the ruling handed down late Friday by U.S. District Judge Taylor McNeel in Gulfport, Mississippi, “is as disappointing as it is absurd.”
“Our client is being shamed and humiliated for explicitly discriminatory reasons, and her family is being denied a once-in-a-lifetime milestone in their daughter’s life,” Morris said. "No one should be forced to miss their graduation because of their gender.”
The ACLU confirmed that the 17-year-old girl — listed in court papers only by her initials L.B. — would skip the Saturday ceremony for Harrison Central High School in Gulfport, about 160 miles (260 kilometers) south of Jackson.
The student “has met the qualifications to receive a diploma," according to Wynn Clark, attorney for the Harrison County School District.
The ACLU sued the district Thursday on behalf of the student and her parents after Harrison Central principal Kelly Fuller and school district superintendent Mitchell King told L.B. that she must follow the boys' clothing rules. Graduating boys are expected to wear white shirts and black slacks, while girls are expected to wear white dresses.
L.B. had selected a dress to wear with her cap and gown. The lawsuit said L.B. had worn dresses to classes and extracurricular events throughout high school, including to a prom last year, and she should not face discriminatory treatment during graduation.

If my dog had a face like that, I’d shave her butt and teach her to walk backwards.
Abraham Lincoln had this situation nailed.
In discussing the question, Lincoln used to liken the case to that of the
boy who, when asked how many legs his calf would have if he called its
tail a leg, replied, ”Five,” to which the prompt response was made that calling the tail a leg would not make it a leg.
The lawsuit said L.B. had worn dresses to classes and extracurricular events throughout high school, including to a prom last year, and she should not face discriminatory treatment during graduation. If this is indeed true, then it does seem unfair of the school to change the rules at graduation time. They needed to put a stop to the foolishness when it started, not at the very last school-sanctioned event the kid will ever attend.
My wife and I were talking to some friends a few days ago about our high school dress codes in the ‘60s. All of us had schools where GIRLS had to wear dresses. Surprisingly, none of us recalled if BOYS were prohibited from wearing dresses.
Many celebrity women have worn black slacks, white shirts, black ties as a fashion statement. This kid could do the same. Glam up the male option.
Why is this all so difficult?
I didn’t read the article because I just ate, but it seems that this is happening because this mentally ill guy wanted to make it an issue. If he had not asked “permission” to wear what he wanted under his robe nobody would have given a crap.
And if the women wear the white robes and the men wear another color, just quietly order the white, shut up and show up. nbd. It is only when you try to insist that others must share your delusion that you get a smackdown, and it is deserved.
We had a local female attorney who always wore a black suit and tie. She did hang out with a “very particular” crowd.
I have $10 that says it will be the reverse ...
Indeed. this person received a Life Lesson free of charge. He should take heed and comport himself appropriately going forward.
Because it ISN’T a girl. It’s a boy.
Trans-disparaging is the thing to be!
Nitwits don’t deserve a break from me,
They are a crazy and demented bunch,
Males are men and nothing else.
New moralities don’t impress at all,
They can’t change the truth just because they bawl,
I don’t hate them, they’re too pathetic for that,
Females are women and nothing else!
The guys
Are guys
The gals
Are gals
Men can’t be lesbians
Mutilations don’t change sex
Genderqueer are deluded twits!
(to the tune of Green Acres, perfect for a husband and wife to sing together just as on the show)
Not so surprising. Because back then, the other boys would have exercised their own form of prohibition.
> Just another “Look at Me!!” moment <
I’m torn on this one. On one hand, if he wants to dress like a she I’m okay with that, as long as no one else’s rights are violated. It’s a free country.
But…I once went to a graduation where one graduate was properly dressed, except that he was wearing huge clown shoes (seriously). As you noted, it was a “Look at Me!!” moment. The principal (an ex-Army paratrooper, by the way) hustled that kid off the stage faster than fast.
I agree with the principal’s move there.
It is wrong to even accommodate their crazy. Trans needs to not be tolerated.
Anyway, this is definitely one of those "look at me" people.
I wonder if the better approach would be to just let them dress how they want and not give them any attention at all. When they find they are going to be treated just like anybody else, the novelty will probably wear off quick.
Missed the ceremony? Boo hoo!
As such behavior is a direct affront to others, civil society suffers damage when disruptive behavior under the guise or excuse of "free expression" is tolerated.
There definitely is more to this story. Caps & gowns aren’t male or female. Did the “transgirl” want to wear high heels and make up? I don’t think he would have been kicked out for that.
Maybe it’s a dude with boobs
He registered for school as a boy. They say he has to dress according to his gender.
OMG did you notice the fingernails in the pic!!! JEEZE!!
