Russia detains three hypersonic rocket scientists as Kremlin is left reeling over claims 'dagger' missiles were shot down by Ukraine's Patriot defence system

A trio of Vladimir Putin's leading hypersonic scientists have been detained on suspicion of high treason in what fellow scientists have declared a 'witch hunt'

Aerodynamics specialist Dr Valery Zvegintsev, 78, is the latest of three prominent scientists from the Khristianovich Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics in Novosibirsk to be arrested on extremely serious charges.

Zvegintsev, 78, along with Anatoly Maslov and Alexander Shiplyuk, are seen as key figures in the development of Russia's hypersonic weapons programme which is thought to be one of the world's most advanced.

News of their detention on suspicion of high treason comes days after a Russian missile assault on Ukraine's capital was largely ineffective, with Ukrainian officials claiming their US-supplied Patriot air defence system managed to down several of Moscow's Kinzhal - or 'Dagger' - hypersonic missiles, which Putin once boasted were 'unstoppable'.

And their institute has protested the arrests, claiming the men were being prosecuted over normal scientific activity such as making presentations and taking part in international conferences and projects, and publishing articles in major journals.

Our military stuff has to be good since every Democrat bad mouths anything and everything we produce.
Russians and Chinese lie about everything. Look at how poorly the Russian war machine is performing when faced with a determined opponent.
Russians will win, but only due to pure inertia.
Chinese will be the same way, waste lives.
Throw enough shit at a wall something will stick.
It will come at a terrible cost, as they lose the best and brightest of their men.
You can see the effect WWII had on America, Europe, and Japan.
Women driven socialism. Personal freedom is now an afterthought.

Since I retired from the Army in 94, Patriot has only gotten much more advanced and better.

Thank you for your service.

In 1990, the high end desk top computer was a 386.

Today's Iphone has more RAM than the original Patriot did.

There is no doubt about the Patriot's ability to shoot down hypersonic missiles.

I would not want to go up against a Patriot battery.

Kinzal missile are a souped up version of the standard 9K720 Iskander ballistic missile with a different motor. They cannot glide nor maneuver. Their tail fins are mostly useless.

Even China has a better prototype.

RE: The Ukies themselves were forced to back away from this claim yesterday. Patriot missiles are worthless against the Kinzhals

Could you kindly provide the source for this? Thanks.

Just look at the video of the attack. The Patriot system fired off a slew of missiles trying to intercept the Kinzhal but the Kinzhal made it through anyway damaging the Patriot installation.

Sure. And, Putin is dead and Russia is using a body double in his place...Russia has been running out of weapons and ammo since last May.

Are you trying to prove you're as dumb as Marcus Maximus and Dennisw?

Raytheon and Lockheed Martin write good software.

The missile itself has long been a good enough interceptor.

Might even be some of the new NG code in there ;-)

Russian Kinzhal Missile Strikes US Patriot System in Kiev + the Fundamental Disadvantage West Faces

Update on the conflict in Ukraine for May 17, 2023:

-Russia’s Ministry of Defense and US officials confirm Russian hypersonic Kinzhal missiles successfully targeted US-made Patriot air defense systems;

- Patriot systems launched approximately 30 missiles over 2 minutes, representing tens of millions of dollars of missiles that were already in short supply;

- Despite this, the Western media continues repeating obvious fabrications about Ukraine intercepting “all” incoming missiles and drones. The Patriot system falling victim to a Kinzhal missile despite firing upward to 30 missiles calls into question Ukraine’s previous claims of intercepting a Kinzhal days earlier;

- As Ukraine burns through Western weapons and ammunition, the West continues preparing to transfer other weapon systems including warplanes;

- European nations are preparing a “coalition” to purchase and provide F-16 fighters to Ukraine;

- F-16 warplanes have no specific capability beyond the aircraft that made up Ukraine’s original air force which is now mostly destroyed;

I don't buy the narrative that the Kurshan missile is easily destroyed, Russia is in a panic and the Patriot system reins. Yet no talk of the DU depot destruction and gamma radiation poisoning. Sundance’s suspicious cat…

Durham proved a vast conspiracy to deceive voters about Trump and Russia, but won't indict anyone, so media can bury the story

Mark Wauck, a retired FBI special agent: From this perspective we can see that the Russia Hoax play two roles. On the one hand, it would help put Hillary—an indifferent campaigner and shrewish personal presence at best—over the top. But the claim of Russian interference in a presidential election could gin up righteous outrage among the American public and lend support for the coming war with Russia. In the event, of course, Hillary lost. The Russia Hoax ended up being used by the Neocons mostly to tie Trump’s hands on foreign policy with regard to Russia. A Hillary regime might have seen a sanctions war to the hilt, such as we now see, before Putin had prepared Russia for that eventuality. Trump’s presidency, despite his own sanctions regime, put that plan on hold—thus the undying Neocon hatred for Trump.

The American Thinker's Thomas Lifson: So, here we are, engaged in a proxy war with Russia, holding the world’s largest nuclear arsenal. Putin is in a war that he can’t afford to lose, and he is forced into China’s embrace, triggering a geostrategic realignment whose consequences are already nearly catastrophic, and risking a nuclear war if Putin gets desperate.

Haven’t you been saying that for over a year now? Hersh is simply blowing more Russian agitprop out of his butt.

Or debris from the intercept.

“damage” could be minimal or severe, and it (rocket/debris) depends on what it hit.

The early Patriots hit SCUDs in Saudi and the debris from those did “damage” on the ground.

LOL Contradicted by everyone else. One patriot battery was slightly damaged by missile debris. In one photo you can see the Patriot missile trail until it hits the target directly overhead. You are right about low flying drones. You need tactical air defense like the Gepard for those.

Face saving political theater for Putin, blames it on the treasonous scientists so the great leader was not at fault.

I don’t remember the source, but it started off mentioning that Ukraine first claimed to shoot down ALL of the missiles fired at the Patriot system only to back off after they were forced to admit a Kinzhal made it through causing damage. The amount of propaganda from Ukraine (and the West) during this entire war has been insane, you can’t believe ANYTHING they say. If they were actually winning then why the need for such over the top propaganda?
