Not Senate but John Dingell was in the US House at 87 and used to be wheeled in and had a young male aide tell him when the vote was being conducted. The young man would ask Dingell (whose head was totally slumped forward) for his preference and then do the vote for him. Current Rep.Debbie Dingel in Michigan is the heir (like in England?) because she was his widow and sort of wanted to give politics a try when he died. She ran for her own term and won, plus re-elected.

I’ve witnessed this in corporations’ numerous times. To the person who, say owns the business, he identifies with the business. If he quits, it’s like quitting his identity. Think, “Okay, I’m no longer Judy.” Then, what/who ARE you? Well...nothing. I’ve seen men who are forced to retire. Even though they left the job healthy and playing golf three times a week, they tend to die within months. They are hollowed out husks of what they once were. Senator Strom Thurmond comes to mind. Recall the many photos of him in the Senate, asleep with a line of drool stretching from his open mouth? If Nancy quit. She’d die. She knows this.

Her husband died about a year ago. She probably has nothing left to go home to, except an empty house and her only daughter and granddaughter.
