A jury has found that Donald Trump sexually abused E. Jean Carroll.
The panel of six men and three women also found that Trump injured advice columnist Carroll in a Manhattan Bergdorf Goodman dressing room and defamed her, ordering the former President to pay her $5million in damages.
Trump has been accused of sexual misconduct or assault by more than two dozen women, but this has so far been the only case to end up before a jury.
Carroll, 79, sued for battery under the Adult Survivors Act, a law passed in New York that allowed a one year window for sexual assault claims normally outside of the statute of limitations.
Her claim for defamation was based on statements made by Trump, 76, when he was President and posts to Truth Social, his own social network in which he called her a liar.
Over two weeks the jury heard emotional testimony from three accusers and two of Carroll's friends, among other witnesses, while Trump himself was a no show.

If they did not find enough evidence to convict Trump of the former, on what evidence did they base their decision on the latter?

Carroll made the rape allegation in the media.(Hence the media talking about a rape trial)
The civil case allegations were battery & defamation.
The democrats in the State of New York wrote a law called the “survivors act” to circumvent the statutes of limitations.
The whole case was funded by progressive POS Reid Hoffman.

The jury system is a joke susceptible to feelings....I mean there is not even an hint of evidence, but just stories...it is SAD what TDS has done to people...now I know how Biden got so many votes...what is wrong with people?

My understanding of this NY law is rape would be penetration w/ penis and she said she did not/could not tell if he penetrated her w/ anything other than his fingers. Jury believed her and her witnesses and Trump chose not to attend trial. Without his in-person testimony refuting her claim, I don’t think it’s a stretch for that jury to find Trump culpable.
Will it matter regarding Trump’s nomination? Doubtful. People believe what they believe and I don’t think this case will be anything but a few days in news cycle.. if it lasts a few days. Not saying some of Trump’s opponents won’t try to make this into a bigger story, but I just don’t think that’s going to matter one bit.

I have been posting ad nauseum (I’m even sick of myself at this point)…The United States is a fascist society controlled by a fascist government.
What needs to happen to the United States is exactly what happened to fascist countries in the mid-20th century.
That being said this case is a travesty. I'm no lawyer but to think the l the New York legislature singled out Trump to allow this case to be tried long past the statute of limitations should be unconstitutional in spirit, if not in the letter of the law
Unless a new trial is ordered an appeal works from the record of the trial court and no be evidence is considered. The appeal is to determine if there were errors as a matter of law.
As this is a civil case the standard is a preponderance of the evidence. By trunk not putting on a defense the preponderance of the evidence by definition favored the petitioner. It is unclear to me why Trump failed to put on a defense. His expert pulling out was a bit surprising. Additionally I wonder if his calculus was not to take the stand as it may hurt him in other cases.
In either event regardless of the actual truth, this verdict and Trumps on again off again testimony is not particularly great optics. The truth is not particularly important in politics. The appearance here — being found liable for sexual abuse and battery will drive a wedge much further between him and the suburban women demographic. This will reduce his chances of winning a general election.
