Aviation branch really puts the screws to people. I commanded an MP company at Camp Page Korea which was essentially an aviation base. A friend of mine was a West Pointer who had been trained and certified on older generation choppers (UH-1 and AH-1). As he was coming to Korea, the last of the Cobras were being packed up having been replaced by AH-64s. This was during the post-coldwar "peace dividend" and forces were shrinking and bases being closed. His branch manager would not approve the transition course for him to move to train on Apaches or Blackhawks, but would not release him from the service obligations he had incurred via West Point and flight school.
He was in a ridiculous Catch-22, probably the biggest screw-over I was aware of during my time in the Army.
Don't feel bad, when I was in the Army (76-84), the unofficial motto of Air Defense Artillery was "We Eat Our Young."
I left after 8 years, my chances of promotion to Major were between slim and none. No way did I desire to endure crappy assignments for 4-5 years in exchange for a severance check.
It was a good decision.
