Most California voters don't want Newsom to run for president, poll says

Most California voters do not want Gov. Gavin Newsom to run for president in 2024, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday.

The poll — which surveyed 1,091 self-identified registered voters in the state over the past week — found that 70% don't want the Democratic governor to seek higher office in the upcoming presidential contest, while just 22% said they do.

The numbers are especially damning when you break them down by party affiliation. Only 35% of Democratic voters said they'd like to see Newsom run for president, while a whopping 54% said they wouldn't. Meanwhile, the sentiment among Republican voters isn't surprising: 90% said they wouldn't want to see Newsom make a bid for the White House. exp-player-logo Read More

"A resounding thumbs down from the home team as California voters tell the Governor: if you have designs on the big job beyond Sacramento, we're not on board," Quinnipiac poll analyst Tim Mallory wrote of the results.

Speculation about a Newsom presidential run abounded last year as Democrats worried about the prospects of nominating 80-year-old President Joe Biden to run for a second term. Newsom repeatedly denied that he would run in 2024 but fueled more speculation by frequently teeing off on prominent Republican governors such as Ron DeSantis of Florida and Greg Abbott of Texas — going so far as to spend campaign funds to attack them in cable and newspaper ads in those states.

Some polls had Newsom and Vice President Kamala Harris as the front-runners to secure the Democratic nomination for president in 2024 if Biden were to not seek a second term.

However, the conversation about replacing Biden in the 2024 contest began to slow down after Democrats managed to avoid major losses in last year's midterm elections.

It doesn’t matter what people really want or what they tell pollsters.

No one in California wanted Kamala Harris for president. Now she’s Vice President. Imagine that.

It looks like Biden is going to have a lot of company in the primaries.

Most want to keep him in California so he can continue destroying the state.

The rest want him in the White House so he can do to the rest of the country, the destruction he's already achieved in California.

That’s funny. Those fools actually think their opinion counts. Don’t they realize America has been hijacked and the man behind the curtain decides who will be potus?

found that 70% (of Californians) don't want the Democratic governor to seek higher office in the upcoming presidential contest.

Then how in TH did he beat a recall election in a landslide?

Must be that vote fraud I keep hearing about. Everyone here (SoCal) gets a mail-in ballot - legal or illegal, dead or alive. My neighbor got three, one to someone who had moved out a decade ago.

He will take vote fraud to a whole new level if he is elected POTUS.

That was done for a reason.

Will they ban in-person voting? Or with the flood of mail-in ballots, will it even matter?
