Indiana Michigan Power urges people to reduce electricity use

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) - Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) and PJM, – the regional power grid operator, are urging people to reduce their use of electricity as the severe weather has led to an extraordinary strain on the power system.

I&M is asking businesses and the public to help by setting thermostats lower than usual (if health allows), postponing the use of major electric appliances such as clothes dryers, stoves, and dishwashers, and turning off non-essential lights, equipment, and appliances.

These steps should be taken as long as safety is not sacrificed.

I&M and PJM ask that these measures be taken until 10 a.m. Sunday to ensure adequate power supplies.

The combined actions of customers can ease the emergency by reducing the overall electricity demand.

Customers should use electricity as needed for personal safety and protection against property damage.

Even minor adjustments to thermostats can make a big difference.

I&M and PJM want to acknowledge that these steps can be an inconvenience, "especially around the holidays, but this is a necessary step to prevent broader power interruptions, and we appreciate our customers; efforts."

If further emergency action is required to reduce the load on the electrical system, PJM would direct I&M to start grid protection power outages to parts of its service territory. These outages would be brief and intermittent whenever possible to limit the impact on customers.

The action will only be taken if necessary to prevent widespread power loss and to prevent long-term damage to the regional electrical system.

Customers should be prepared for the possibility of temporary electric service outages if further emergency action is required.

I&M and PJM ask people to please check with the elderly or family, friends, and neighbors with medical conditions or disabilities to make sure they have a plan for possible outages.

Updates on the situation can be found at indianamichiganpower.com.

Good news! My garage is only 36 degrees right now. I’m using it as an extra refrigerator for a few items that don’t fit in my regular fridge.

Wyoming is so far away with low sulfur coal. If only there was some way to convert that to electricity. Maybe in the future some scientist will have a breakthrough discovery.

A grid not built on a plentiful base load foundation is destined to fail.

We will learn this the hard way, apparently when nat gas - either through exporting it, pipeline transport failure, or simple failure of supply to meet demand.

There will be a lot of folks in the northeast and midwest that are about to resolve to move to floridaif the grid lets them down.

There is little that can stop a 90 day pile of coal outside a well-maintained steam plant from being converted to electricity to keep people warm fairly inexpensively.

There is a lot that can go wrong with nat gas moving from its source to its destination “just in time” to provide power to freezing citizens who have no clue in advance how much it will cost when you need to keep warm.

Or, we could do like we did in the good old days when we had can-do spirit and built enough power plants to meet demand. I HATE seeing statements like this…
The combined actions of customers can ease the emergency by reducing the overall electricity demand.
How about instead the “combined actions of UTILITIES to build enough reliable generation to meet customer demand”?

Dems in Indiana Michigan can go sit in their EVs with seat heaters turned on, maybe?

Sounds like more green energy needed.

The largest coal mine in the eastern US is in Indiana. If only scientists could figure out a way to make electricith from coal.

I was just thinking that - with all the stalled traffic and people, there is nothing on the MSM about electric vehicles being stranded.
