I think that is a adequate reason to defend and value territory.

As others have pointed out, it’s also a meat grinder for the Russian Army. The battle for Stalingrad was so bitterly fought at least in part because if its symbolic value. The crossing of the Rhine in 1945 was a symbolic and propaganda set back for the Nazis. It’s hard to pretend that you are winning the enemy is on your soil.

People will fight to defend their homes, and their home country. Wars are won by tactics and strategy, but symbolism and morale cannot be discounted.
