Walmart CEO Doug McMillon issued a stark warning Tuesday: If theft does not slow down, the retailer will close stores across the country.
"Theft is an issue," he told CNBC. "It is higher than what it has historically been."
He added: "If that's not corrected over time, prices will be higher, and/or stores will close."
McMillon did not say during the interview how much money Walmart has lost in stolen items this year. Walmart did not immediately reply to an Insider request for that number

Vote Democrat, go woke, the whole country goes broke. At the core of this destructive behavior is the decadence and hedonism that is more destructive to a civilization than the most virulent virus.
When you encourage customers to do their own checkout and bagging, there are bound to be “mistakes made” and “items inadvertently missed with the scanner.”
Most people are honest but when you put the temptation right in their hands some are going to fudge on it. And with the price of things today they can rationalize it with thinking how much Walmart is making on these new higher prices.
If Walmart wants to cut down on it they need to hire more checkers and close down the self-check option. Which they won’t because employees cost a lot, are unreliable, and can sue you. Not to mention, steal from you, as well.
I have already called being Lord Humungus in the near future…
In California, theft is government sanctioned redistribution of wealth. Armed guards can not make any difference because they will be tried for assault or murder if they shoot the black thieves.
It’s not just in bad areas. I’ve seen it happen in scan and go’s in a good neighborhood. The stores can’t find cashiers and self service checkouts are replacing them.
The problem is we kicked God out of America. Without God, right and wrong is whatever a person thinks it is.
I worked at walmart years ago, and I was told that store lost about $17,000 a year due to theft. Who knows what it is now.
Also threatened to raise prices and close stores.
Living in the RATS’ new lawless America really sucks but it does make America more welcoming to the foreign invaders coming across our former borders. The crap coming in prefers a lawless, anything goes lifestyle.
I concur... self check-out is gonna be a universal money sink. You’d think 3-4 extra cashiers hired at $16-20 per hour would pay for themselves vs. theft losses.
Obviously, a racist who has a problem with social justice, equity and reparations. Filthy colonizer.
WalMart is also sponsoring drag queen shows. I really don’t care if they close any stores.
That is exactly what should happen.
Should have shot the rioters and looters dead in the first place. These theves might be disproportionally affected.
I would be curious to know how much Walmart and other stores have lost in sales by their coercing shoppers to use auto-check-outs.
I know my trips to the local Walmart Superstore have been cut to maybe one or two visits per year. They have a dozen auto-check-out stations and a long line for the one live checker.

I figure the thievery that goes on at the self checkouts must cost them less money than actually hiring checkers.
Maybe it’s catching up with them.
Not a good year for the Walton clan ... stores being pilfered and paying $4.65 billion for the Denver Broncos ... at this point in the season 3 & 9 and last in the AFC West. After paying an inflated price, driven up in a bidding war, the value of this franchise has plummeted.
