He could've laughed, said it was a ridiculous question and followed up with stating he will not give the enemy media a headline.
I don't advise & consult campaigns, if I did, that'd be my advice. Treat the media like the enemy they are and don't give them a headline.
Someone thoroughly skilled in handling enemy media would've known that, don't you think?
