Don’t Blame McConnell
National Review ^ | September, 13, 2022 | The Editors

Election defeats naturally create circular firing squads, but the last few days have seen a more directed effort to put Minority Leader Mitch McConnell against a wall and shoot him at dawn.

The MAGA forces in the party, eager to deflect blame from Donald Trump for the failure to take the Senate, are pointing fingers at McConnell. Trump himself wrote on his Truth Social network, “It’s Mitch McConnell’s fault.” Meanwhile, there is agitation in the caucus to delay this week’s scheduled leadership vote in the hopes that some viable alternative to McConnell will emerge.

There are legitimate criticisms of McConnell, who retains the support of the lion’s share of his caucus, but most of the case against him is malicious and ill-conceived.

[cut]

Mitch McConnell, who won’t be the Senate leader forever, isn’t flawless. But Republicans could do worse, and if they were somehow to dump him in a stupid and chaotic coup, would.

All this said, even by the harshest reasonable evaluation, McConnell’s midterm performance isn’t in the same universe as Donald Trump’s... For him to turn around and blame McConnell requires chutzpah even by his shameless standards.

The bottom line still is that the Senate is McConnell's turf and he whiffed. He made poor decisions on upfront agenda strategy, poor communication of early support of state primary winners, poor control of his caucus not up for reelection, and poor funding decisions late in the race.

Yeah, don’t blame McConnell for being in positions of power such as Senate Republican Whip, Senate Majority Leader, or Senate Minority Leader since 2003, and not doing a f*cking thing.

NR serves a negative barometer for what Conservatives should be thinking.

McConnell and his leadership let horrible attacks go on for years against Trump.

Just two weeks before the Election, Nancy P is on Video say if she is going to Punch out Trump, please let me get close enough to punch him out.

Nothing from Leadership! Same when Swalwell and Schiff piled on.

But, the first thing bad said about Liz Cheney, McConnell and his leadership ran before Cameras to defend her.

You can’t win as a Party or in a chess match without guarding your King.

Trump gave us relief from McConnell in 2016.

McConnell had a tight leash on Trump, through his control of the Senate confirmation process - especially for Attorney General. In the end, McConnell successfully helped the deep-state neuter Trump.

Everybody wants to be the leader, but then they don’t want to accept the responsibility for failure.

Nobody is asking Mitch to kill himself or retire to a monastery.

He just needs to step down from being the leader.

He failed.

Without correction there is no learning.

The MAGA forces in the party, eager to deflect blame from Donald Trump for the failure to take the Senate.

Okay, National Derpview. Explain EXACTLY how its Trump's fault. No man in America has been more repsonsible for getting out the peoples' vote in recent history. Flipping large percentages of black, hispanical, and even the gay vote, along with other minorities.

Will we also blame election fraud on Trump? One of the very few who even says it exists? One of the only ones who uplifts and supports so-called 'election deniers'?

National Rewview pisses down my back and tells me its raining. But what ele is new?

I don’t get how anyone would be convinced to vote based on an advertisement. No ad would have changed my vote to one for Patty ..

I liked that the NR would not put the names of the authors of this bull$hit for people to see! Authors = 'the editors'

Are the authors afraid to post their names or just embarrassed? Just wondering?

I blame state legislatures, and Republicans in those state legislatures, who blindly and complacently went along with the Democrats on vote-by-mail proposals during the pandemic, never stopping for a moment to consider what vote-by-mail has done to Republicans in California.

Non-MAGA republicans have historically demonstrated an uncanny capability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, both in elections and legislatively.

The Tea Party was the last group to make a difference by shaking the tree. Term limits and leadership turnover are the only real solution to this stagnant pond of underperforming blowhards that call themselves our leadership.

No true Conservative even bothers to read NR drivel. Amazed they still exist. There must be a few stragglers in the McConnell camp.

I didn’t read the whole thing, but would dumping McConnell after 20 years really be a “stupid and anarchic coup?”

Isn’t it rational and sensible to assume that after 20 years he’s off his game and the party has someone in the Senate who is qualified to replace him?

I blame the failure of the Republican Party itself. There has been no organization at the State level in too many states.
The Party has been corrupt for too long, basically a piggy bank for elected Republicans. The Party has not organized, recruited, fundraised, etc. It’s all about the Gods now, meaning the elected officials who think they are Gods.
