I can tell you in one word why they ended it: money.

The NHS is government run health care. Every penny they spend is provided by the government.

“Gender affirming care” is a lifelong commitment. Transition a child, and that child will need medical care (drugs, surgeries, etc) for the next 50 plus years. And in England, the government has to pay for all of it.

Compare that to the USA where the insurance companies pay for everything, not the government.

In the USA ObamaCare mandated that insurance companies cover “gender affirming care”. It didn’t cost the government a dime to do this. It only costs the insurance companies.

The government doesn’t have an incentive to roll back trans care. The doctors don’t haven an incentive to roll back trans care. In fact, American doctors have a financial incentive to push trans care. They know that once it’s started, it means a lifetime patient (aka customer) for their practice, and payment is guaranteed due to the mandate.

And insurance companies don’t care, because if every insurance company is forced to offer it, then none of them are at a competitive/financial disadvantage by offering it. They all have to jack up rates to cover it equally.
