When I was a programmer, I worked with a very mild mannered, kind of nerdy Quality Control Analyst (ok, it was a software company, there were no shortage of nerds). The girl traveled across the Soviet Union in the mid-80s by herself sightseeing, which kind of shocked everyone when she talked about it, she didn’t seem the adventurous type at all.
The kicker was she met a Russian guy who talked her into carrying a suitcase through checkpoints. She traveled across Russia on trains carrying his suitcase through security at each stop.
She said the Russian guards at the checkpoints were afraid of offending American tourists and just waved her through with no problem. I guess things have changed in old Mother Russia (I asked my friend if she listed “smuggling Afghani heroin across Russia” in her job skills).
