Germany could embrace wood for heat if Russia further cuts gas flows, Deutsche Bank says.

The bank said in a note that it expects German demand for gas to fall 10% below 2021 levels.

...

German households could turn to wood as a heating source this winter as gas supplies remain tight while Russia restricts flows to Europe,

Deutsche Bank .. expects gas consumption in Germany to be 10% below 2021 levels thanks to private households saving and high gas prices. It also noted that coal and lignite could emerge as replacements for natural gas in the industrial power sector.

...

Deutsche's latest reading comes as Europe braces for a potentially colder winter than normal

At least that will bring more light to the black Forrest since all the trees will be cut down

I didn’t know why it was called the Black Forest (scharzwald) until I went there. Then I understood it perfectly. I think most German homes don’t have wood burning stoves.

“What wood. There aren’t enough trees or wood burning stoves in Germany to keep the Germans warm this winter.”

Thank you for pointing out the elephant in the living room.

At some point, I’ll do the math, but I suspect I’ll get the same result, which is that there may be enough wood in the remaining German forests for a population of 8 million, but not nearly enough for 80 million.

Lots of people here figure that since they have 5 acres of land, every German family has the same - but that simply is NOT the case.

On top of that, will the wood that they have even be dried out for this winter, if they’re only now starting to understand the need to harvest it?

“10% below 2021” — hard to believe considering the cut-off of Russian gas. I figured it would be 50% or more below 2021.

If they don’t already have the wood cut, split and stacked, it won’t be dry enough to burn this winter.

The Germans made a synthetic rubber they called ''buna''. I don't think it was very good.

Plenty of wood if you pry the shingles off your neighbor’s house.

Loads of dead dry wood lying around CA forests just waiting to burn. If Newsom and Biden would let Germany come, collect and ship it

“I used to go through about 7 cords a winter...”

How much is that? Do you know how much it is in trees?

And was that your only heat source?

Freezing in cities is not a lot of fun. This happened during the breakup of Yugoslavia. Every tree in every park gets cut down for firewood. Heirloom furniture is burned. Door frames. Interior doors.

Not to mention the fire and carbon monoxide risk of improvised fireplaces in apartment buildings.

Along with what others have said I remember German forests as mostly conifers. Not very good for firewood anyway. When I lived there we had a coal furnace.
