Multiple people are feared to have been killed after an Amtrak train carrying 243 people derailed close to Kansas City in Missouri.
It's still unclear what caused the smash - but one imaged shared by a survivor showed what appeared to be a broken truck axle lying to one side of the tracks.

I used to live right next to the tracks in Kannapolis NC (outside Charlotte) and we’d get to see the Carolinian running between Charlotte and Washington roll through northbound in the mornings and southbound in the evenings. That one was smaller, no observation car and I think maybe one fewer sleeper. Usually 7-8 cars total.

Just watching the chat on Virtual Railfan from LaPlata, it appears this stretch of track was a 90mph zone for Amtrak, Hitting a dump truck at that speed will be catastrophic for some.

Reading the story, I could not help but think:
One is an accident
Two is a coincidence
Three is an attack
I’ve only ridden between DC, Philly, & NYC. They can go at a fair clip.

Lots of fun, great people, real easy trip.
Still don’t fly. Like NYC Yellow Cabs in the air. Duct Tape and Bondo. At least smoking on a plane helped to show the cracks in the fuselage.
Haven’t used Amtrak in quiet a while. With gas prices now, maybe .. ?
Brandon seems to have lost interest in AmTrak accidents
since becoming President. I didn’t notice any participation
level at all on the last accident. Maybe I missed something.

The major difference here is trains West of Chicago (and the Auto Train) use “Superliner” equipment. These are two level cars you enter on the bottom and they connect on the upper level. The sleepers have rooms on both levels and the bulk of the seating is on the upper level of the coach cars. The observation car has the cafe car portion downstairs.
IIRC they have discussed replacements for them for a long time as they were built in the the late 70’s for the first batch and in the mid 90s for the second batch. While safe, just not up to modern standards of what people expect, particularity in the sleepers as most rooms only have one single plug and they don’t offer WiFi.
It was Mendon, IL that Trump was at two days ago.

I forgot the exact speeds, IIRC it is “posted” 90 but they usually run 1-2 mph under as speeding is a very big no-no. Outside the Northeast Corridor, that is the fastest passenger train. Most other Long Distance trains usually have speed limits of something like 50-70 MPH as they run freight RR tacks that aren’t built for high speeds, but rather weight.
