The other Amazon forest! Retail giant will build helix-shaped tower at its new Virginia 'HQ2', complete with tree-lined ‘mountain’ visitors can climb at weekends

Will be the centerpiece of Amazon's $2.5 billion Virginia campus when it opens in 2025.

Includes ramp running around the outside of the building to its summit which is lined with greenery.

From some vantage points the helix will dominate the region´s skyline like no building other than the Washington Monument.

The helix features a spiral-hike around its exterior, complete with trees, and will let visitors follow a winding outdoor ramp around the edge of the building to its summit.

Looks like a maintenance nightmare to me.

They have to keep that greenery watered and not create landslides at the same time.

The article doesn't describe how it's constructed but I hope they have some level spots so they can pump water back up incrementatlly and shove dirt back up as needed.

Otherwise the thing will just turn into an urban mud slide.

Barring all that, it sorta looks like the turd emoji.

Is it just me or does that thing look like it’s an architectural metaphor for screwing employees and the public.

Is the building going to be run on alternative energy sources and will the construction feature all materials that do not contain petroleum products? Will the vehicles bringing material on site be electric?

Someone needs to get with Bezos and ask these questions. What’s the point on building something today if it is going to be built and consumed like the previous 100 years of construction?

I would think the liability insurance would be prohibitive (except to Amazon’s Bezos) to most companies, and any injury/death lawsuits could bankrupt most (except to Amazon/Bezos) companies.

I haven’t seen the plans but here’s a fearless SWAG on how the green belt spiral will work. This is based on looking at the renderings in the OP article.

The ramp will have two zones, one for the vegetation and the second for the pedestrians. The inner zone will be for the larger vegetation so as to keep that weight closer to the center of the structure. The pedestrian zone would be more towards the outer wall.

The trick is the inner vegetation zone. I think this will be level, horizontal plats that are sort of like a staircase that steps up the spiral. It likely will be a hydroponic growing system and the surface will be more of a camouflage to mimic a forest or garden surface. Weight control is critical.

The pedestrian zone for hiking the spiral will probably be a ramp with regularly spaced horizontal, flat spots for a place to to rest and to exit the ramp to an interior elevator. It would not be good PR to have people stroking out from the stress of the hike. LOL.

What would be a blast would be a track for wheeled bobsleds. What a ride!
