Rate sure but if you get paid by the hour and work eight fewer hours naturally you’ll make less and struggle more to pay your bills. I wouldn’t be surprised if they try to demand higher hourly pay to offset the shorter week.

As with any forced increase in wages, the employee must produce more value than the wage/benefits cost of having the employee on the payroll. If not, the employee needs to go. Any new hires must meet a higher level of capability to ensure the productive capability is worthy of the labor expense. The net effect is layoffs and excluding a broader range of candidates that aren't good enough. The gap between "good enough" and unskilled, entry level broadens.
