Why Russia faces a growing threat to its navy off Ukraine
https://www.washingtonexaminer.com ^ | March 30, 2022 | Brent D. Sadler

Russia hadn’t lost a warship to an attack since World War II. Until last week.

On Thursday, the Ukrainian navy announced it destroyed a Russian amphibious warship, the Saratov, that was conducting resupply missions in the Ukrainian port of Berdyansk. While the details are fuzzy, it's yet more proof that Russia’s war in Ukraine isn't going well.

Following the invasion, Turkey invoked the 1936 Montreux Convention and denied entry to all foreign warships not previously based in the Black Sea. What’s there now, and perhaps what Russia can bring by canal from the Caspian Sea, is all the navy Russia will have for this war. Before the invasion, Russia moved warships from around the world to bolster its combat power near Ukraine. In total, 12 large surface and nine amphibious warships massed in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov on Ukraine’s southern coast.

It isn’t known what smashed the ship involved, but Ukraine is known to have attacked Russian warships with artillery and mines. The ship's demise, however, should encourage the United States and NATO to deliver anti-ship cruise missiles to Ukraine. One example might be the truck-mounted version of the Harpoon missile system. The Norwegian helicopter-launched Penguin anti-ship missile could also be brought into play.

As you mentioned and many people don’t realize, Japan didn’t just bomb Pearl Harbor, they launched massive coordinated attacks all across the Pacific.

There are changes in countermeasures that make it obsolete. Contemplate that if you can.

The fallacy in your statement is that the exocets while generationally outmoded are still very lethal

Tell me what you know about anti ship missile countermeasures. The fallacy in your statement is that these things render slower missiles like Exocet obsolete.

Read between the lines of history. There is ample open source record that FDR wanted Pearl Harbor because the Japanese wanted to stop Maoists.

Anyone starting with “this is a dumb comment” smells like reality avoiding.

There are both hard & soft kill systems. Soft kill are usually electronic in nature and can use a variety of mechanisms to defeat the missile. Hard kill methods can employ both pyrotechnic and directed energy technologies. They can work in a coordinated manner to take the missile out. I can go greatly into depth and detail but I’m at a post funeral social event right now and I don’t want to be rude.

Fair enough. Mourning, honoring and celebrating the life lost takes priority.

Hug anyone who needs it and get any hugs you need.

In 1941 Mao was doing his best to avoid fighting the Japanese. He was not a big concern.

FDR and Churchill’s first concern was Hitler. The US was pushing the limits of neutrality to support the British by escorting convoys halfway across the Atlantic, leading to USN attacks on multiple U-Boats and the sinking of the destroyer USS Rueben James (DD-245) on October 31st 1941.

The second concern was Japan. However if you follow events from the Japanese occupation of French Indochina in September of 1940, through all of 1941 you can see relations between Japan and the West deteriorate.

The US, British, Dutch, and Australians were making moves to defend against an expected Japanese assault. The US sent multiple reinforcement convoys to the Philippines. It also withdrew Subforce China, The Yangtze River Patrol and 4th Marine Regiment from China to the Philippines.

The US was expecting war, Pearl Harbor was not needed. The US would have been at war when Japan attacked Wake, Guam, and the Philippines.

It was just that nobody thought the Japanese were capable of sending their main striking force to the maximum limit of its range and hitting our largest Pacific base when their main thrust was South towards Java.
