FOOD FOR THOUGHT Major ‘wartime’ plan for Irish farmers to grow grain to avoid food shortage emergency during Russian war on Ukraine

IRISH farmers will be asked to grow some wheat, barley and other grains to offset any potential food shortage caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The 'wartime' plan which is being drawn up as Russia continues its bombardment of Ukraine because both countries supply large amounts of grain and fertilizers around the world.

Agriculture Minister Charlie McConalogue has created an emergency team that has been tasked with coming up with financial support to help persuade Irish farmers to grow more grains here.

The nation is heavily reliant on imported grains which are used in both human and animal food.

Ireland imports a staggering 60 per cent of the five million tons of grain the nation consumes annually.

Ukraine supplies Ireland with the majority of our maize corn - a main ingredient in animal feed.

Russia also supplies a large amount of chemical fertilizer.

Soybean hybrids developed for places like Northern Minnesota’s 65 day growing season are a possibility - I’m sure there’s other crops that can be grown - alfalfa? The biggest problem is lack of fertilizers.. that would apply to Kansas and the Ukraine also...

Yikes! Crop yields will drop like lead balloons without fertilizers.

Any chance Russia will sell their excess surplus to China?

Almost everyone above a certain age in China knows someone who starved to death. It’s one of the things that makes the Chinese serious people... not a lot of room for fluff when you’ve seen some of the stuff they’ve seen.
