It is almost impossible to have a reasonable and intelligent discussion about this currently.

As soon as you say that Russia/Putin is not crazy and might have an intelligent reason(s) for moving on Ukraine...from their point of view....the discourse goes right to “crazy” and “be careful who you say that to.”

That you can have people question Russian Press but not ours, after all we have been lied to over the years, is an amazing feat of propaganda and the product of an exceptionally weak but arrogant education system domestically.

I'm pretty sure that a lot of invaders throughout history had rational or intelligent reasons from "their point of view.". Heck, the Germans wanting Lebenschraum to the East in WW2 was an intelligent reason from their point of view.

I suspect what most people are referring to when they accuse Putin of being "crazy" is what has happened after the Russians overran the disputed Eastern areas and decided to gobble up all of Ukraine. I personally don't believe it was as much crazy as it was a function of bad intelligence. Had Ukraine fallen very quickly without much bloodshed, and before the West could really rally around a response, Putin might have looked like a genius.

Obviously, that's not what happened. So at this point, the whole cost benefit analysis of what Russia is doing looks completely out of whack. Of course, Putin did not know this would happen when he made the decision to invade.

Regardless, whether something appears rational from the perspective of your own self-interest has nothing to do with whether an action is justified or moral. It may be completely rational to murder your neighbor and steal his stuff if you can get away with it, but that doesn't make it right.
