Chinese official has told Newsweek that the issues of Ukraine and Taiwan were entirely separate, but at the same time has stressed that the self-ruling island is a part of China in language mirroring Russian President Vladimir Putin's own speech questioning the sovereignty of a neighboring country against which he has since ordered military action.
"Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory and there is only one China in the world," Liu Pengyu, spokesperson for Beijing's embassy in Washington, told Newsweek. "This is an irrefutable historical and legal fact."
Asked if China saw comparisons in Washington's approach to sending arms to Kyiv despite Moscow's protests and offering weapons to Taipei in spite of Beijing's challenges, Liu said "the Taiwan issue and the Ukraine issue can't be compared."
The remarks before Putin ordered a series of overnight air and missile strikes Wednesday as part of a "special military operation" to "demilitarize" Ukraine, which he has demanded not be allowed into the U.S.-led NATO military alliance.
On Monday, the Russian leader recognized two self-proclaimed rebel republics in Ukraine's east in a speech in which he said Ukraine was "not just a neighboring country for us" but "an inalienable part of our own history, culture and spiritual space." He also argued that "modern Ukraine was entirely created by Russia" during the onset of the Soviet Union and "never had stable traditions of real statehood."

“...there is only one China in the world...”
Yes. This is true. China belongs to Taiwan. The difference is that Taiwan doesn’t want the mainland back.
We have hard times coming, I bet Taiwan is next.
My bet is on the American southwest falling first; it is totally ignored by the media.
bflr
Despite the headline's cheery attempt to draw a distinction, those are not words of comfort are they. Taiwan is hosed. Thanks FJB. If only we had a real President like we did from 2017-2021.
It is a matter of exactly when and exactly how.
Not only does Taiwan belong to China but so does the Siberian region around the Amur River - with half of Putin’s army tied up in the Ukraine, this is perfect time for Xi to take the Amur region back.
Stupid Series by the way
We shouldn’t be involved in the Ukraine at all. None of our business. Ukraine has been part of the Rus for CENTURIES.
Taiwan, on the other hand, existed BEFORE the chicoms did. They were ousted by the ‘coms and are a Republic (at least according to the name they call themselves)
The difference between these two, as far as US interests are concerned has to do with the chip foundries that are located in Taiwan. It would be a colossal error for the US to allow this to fall into Xi’s hands. It would have world wide economic impact far beyond what we are already seeing from Rus\Ukraine. The largest, most prolific foundries are located in Taiwan. These foundries supply chips for just about any electronic device you use on a daily basis and just about any other electronic device you can think of. Electronics are in everything you use today, from your cell phone, to your hair dryer, to your refrigerator, to your tv. ALL medical devices you can think of have chips in them that come from Taiwan. Your mother’s pacemaker? Yep. Traffic lights? Yep. And never mind any kind of aeronautic or defense technology. The list is enormous and seemingly never ending and ALL of that would come into question if the despotism of china overtakes that small island. Moreover, should a scorched-earth campaign take place to prevent those foundries from falling into Xi’s hands, building a new foundry to replace one that has been blown up would take around $30 billion dollars and take 5 years to build.
This scenario with Taiwan has the potential to send us back to the technology era of the 1950s. Moreover, it would subject governments and peoples world-wide to the whims of a communist dictator.
Ukraine means nothing. Taiwan, on the other hand, would mean a certain and radical change to how the world works.
If Taiwan failed and we had a trade embargo with China that would be the BEST thing to ever happen to the US economy for a long time!! We can then make electronics in the USA again. Short term paint LONG TERM GAIN.
China will make a move soon. Biden is weak.
Total BS glowBULList scare tactics. The USA can, should and I predict will make everything again and be self sufficient. GowBULList Free Traitors™ be damned
I agree with the fact that we can and should build things essential to our national security and economy here in the US. We are completely capable of doing it. Its funny how Trump was vilified for saying and thinking this. Something about being a racist because of it? More like common sense.
The reality is, IF taiwan is taken, all chips produced there would have chicom backdoors in them.
All our defense products would then be suspect. Chicoms could and would do nefarious things, even spying to get blackmail info.
Yes we can and should build these things here. But if the foundries are taken, there is going to be significant pain between that point and when the new foundries are up and running at full capacity here. I’d say at a MINIMUM, 5-10 years of pain.
Short-sighted people call names and say bullshit. Whatever. Believe what you want to believe in your little fantasy world. The reality that has been proven over and over and over is that the bad people will _always_ do bad things. Expect it.
The price of rigging comes with a high price that can last for years.
