On Thursday night (20 Jan 2022), prisoners began revolting in Gweiran Prison (in Hasakah, Syria), where thousands of suspected IS members have been held following the defeat of the terror group in 2019.
On the same evening, fighters attacked the prison and a car bomb was exploded nearby, according to reports. Shami later said that some 89 prisoners had been recaptured, but fighting continued near the prison into Saturday.
In a statement, the SDF said that 17 of its members and those affiliated with allied groups had been killed since the assault in Hasakah began. The SDF also reported that 22 IS fighters had died. According to officials with the anti-IS coalition, its aircraft carried out strikes targeting suspected militants in the area, though few additional details were provided.
The attack in Hasakah, along with a Friday assault in Iraq that left at least 11 soldiers dead, represents some of the deadliest activity attributed to IS since their official defeat.

It appears to have been a coordinated operation of rioting by the prisoners, and attack by an external assault force. Some got out, but it will be hard for most to get out of the area (presumably to Turkey). Maybe some big fish can wriggle out in the confusion (which may have been the goal), but most will likely be rounded back up, or killed.

Any Russians in that area?
It’s all good.....................
Do not take jihadists prisoner.
Kill them.
All of them.
They cannot be reformed, they think they are acting on behalf of Allah.
“Any Russians in that area?”
I have not really been following the situation there for over a year.
In some parts of the Kurdish controlled areas, Russian troops have been patrolling, like up around Kobane. They have pretty good long term relations with the Kurds, and are main sponsors of the Syrian regime, who the Kurds still need for protection from Turkey. I really don’t know if the Russians are on the ground that far East, but I don’t recall hearing of them operating around there.
Islam is a death cult that needs to be wiped from the face of the earth.
ISIS terrorists fighting Hezbollah, Russians, Syrians, Iranians and Chinese.... Let’s get the popcorn.
SPJNK.
Us ground forces now engaged in attack on ISIS held prison. This is like yesteryear: https://dnyuz.com/2022/01/24/u-s-troops-join-assault-on-prison-where-isis-holds-hostages/

Preferably ended, not recaptured.
No.
I don’t think so.
