Colin Powell Was Nearly the Future of the GOP Before Trump (Bwahahahaha)

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell, who sadly passed away from COVID complications, will be remembered for many accomplishments and failings. His legacy will have detractors on the right (he was a sellout who endorsed Obama) and the left (he misled us about WMDs), but I can’t help thinking what if he had been the future of the Republican Party?

Counterfactuals are always messy, but bear with me. There is reason to believe that Powell was Ronald Reagan’s vision of the Republican Party’s bright future. And Powell might well have defeated Bill Clinton in 1996. That would have made Powell America’s first Black president. Assuming re-election, he would have been president when 9/11 happened. Everything thereafter would, likely, have been very different.

And, of course, it’s hard to imagine a starker contrast than what eventually happened to America (and the GOP): President Donald J. Trump.

This actually could have happened. Fourteen months before the 1996 presidential election, a Time/CNN poll found that “If the 1996 presidential election were held today, Colin Powell, running on the GOP ticket, would beat Bill Clinton 46 percent to 38 percent…”

The Deep State whispered into Colon Pals ear, the Mi Lai Massacre didn’t happen. It whispered into his ear, there are WMD’s and Uranium in Saddam’s Iraq. It whispered that Syria was a bigger threat than ISIS/ISIL. It shouted that Muhammar Khadafi need to fall. It demanded that Egypt ignore the crowds in the street, and put into power a Muslim power mad man. It screamed that Trump was Satan incarnate. In each case, this “man of integrity” soul’d out to his Masters.

I am sorry that he died, I feel the pain of death even from far away. With that said, he was no hero.

Colon Bowel was an affirmative action General because of George H.W. Bush, then affirmative action Sec. of State. That is just a short way of saying he was Deep State all the way.

I never understood the appeal but he had his fans especially in the nineties. His wife didn’t want him to run. If I recall there were rumors she had things she didn’t want in the spotlight so he didn’t run. He would’ve been the obvious nominee in 1996 but the Clintons would have won I suspect. I still cannot believe we got the “electable” Bob Dole as GOP nominee. Ridiculous!

Can’t forget him dancing on Obama’s stage at the 2008 convention. We’re fortunate McCain lost, he was the media’s choice. I do wonder how closely aligned Powell was with the W administration vs. whether he was more a pawn. I have no feelings about him either way. He was definitely NOT a Republican after 2008, it’s only a question of whether he changed in reaction to things or whether Reagan and others supporting him was all a play on his part for his career advancement. It doesn’t matter now. RIP.

Powell, along with Condoleeza Rice, showed his true colors at the earliest opportunity in spite of the strong support they had from conservatives.

I could be totally 180° out but I always thought we fought Iraq twice because Powell stopped it the first time.

It was more a protest statement against Clinton. And no worse a ticket than Dole/Kemp. Probably more electable.

The media identified him as a Republican, so that when he attacked Republicans uninformed people might be more impressed by what he said. He held office under Republicans, but I wonder if he ever voted for a Republican candidate for President in his life.

Powell was well to the left of both Dole and Kemp (pro-abortion, pro-gun control, pro-affirmation action, pro-gays in the military, etc.) which was true back in 1996 as well. Putting him on a GOP ticket, in either the Presidential or Veep slot, would have been similar to having Arlen Specter or Chris Shays as the GOP standbearer.

The ONE thing I think Powell did right in his career was avoiding elective office. He would have been a disaster as President. Basically he'd be a GOP President the same way Earl Warren was a "Republican” Supreme Court judge.

In my scenario, he was pretty much a Geraldine Ferraro pick.

Based on his other Health Issues he had, I would say he died with The Kung Flu, not because of The Kung Flu.

He turned into an Assistant DEMONCRAT and lost any respect I had for him.

As far as him running for POTUS, it is said that he didn’t because his Wife feared for his Safety. The question arises, exactly whom did she think would harm him, DEMONCRATS or Republicans?

I liked Powell at one time. Never saw him as Presidential
material. Our side has one flaw that concerns me. A person
does something admirable, and the next thing you know they
have a following pushing for them to be president.

These people don’t see beyond that one event, and don’t really
get it that this person could be a raging RINO. They just
git it in their head, and you can’t talk talk them off the
ledge.

The guy was elderly, had Parkinson’s, beat cancer once and was fighting it again.

No disrespect to the man, but a mosquito bite could have taken him out. He had a very bad immune system.

Yes, I think you’re pretty close to truth there.

Why is it, that we the American people did not have a clue that General, Colin Powell was seriously ill with “China/Biden” virus. Something smells rotten here. I do not trust Joe Biden and his cronies one iota. Only God & Joe Biden knows what happened to General Powell!!! Sad days for the American Republic!!!

Had he run, and as a “honest” leftist, his surge of support in the GOP would’ve evaporated quickly. Otherwise he might’ve pulled a Willard the Rat and lied about being Conservative outright. Since he turned out to be a truly deceitful, backstabbing weasel, he might’ve gone full Willard.

>> Give him credit where it’s due. He successfully opposed Bush 41 going further into Iraq. <<

Give him CREDIT for that? Powell's "accomplishment" of stopping General Schwarzkopf from entering Baghdad to FINISH the job in the first Gulf War and seizing Saddam when he had the chance? That "accomplishment" directly set the stage for ANOTHER Iraq War 12 years later when Saddam was left to fester on his own and continue to rule as a dictator in the middle east.

I give Powell "credit" for that the same way Joe Biden deserves "credit" for his "successful" evacuation from Afghanistan!
