Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III has ordered six commercial airlines to provide passenger jets to help with the growing U.S. military operation evacuating Americans and Afghan allies from Kabul, the Afghan capital, the Pentagon said on Sunday.
Mr. Austin activated Stage 1 of the Civil Reserve Air Fleet, created in 1952 after the Berlin airlift, to provide 18 airliners to help ferry passengers arriving at bases in the Middle East from Afghanistan, John F. Kirby, the Pentagon spokesman, said in a statement.
The current activation is for 18 planes: four from United Airlines; three each from American Airlines, Atlas Air, Delta Air Lines and Omni Air; and two from Hawaiian Airlines.
The Pentagon does not anticipate a major impact to commercial flights, Mr. Kirby said.
Capt. John Perkins, a spokesman for the military’s Transportation Command, said on Sunday that the commercial airliners would begin service on Monday or Tuesday and that they would fly evacuees both from the Middle East to Europe and from Europe to the United States.
Captain Perkins said in a telephone interview that the military had requested wide-bodied, long-haul aircraft capable of carrying several hundred passengers. He said that discussions started with the airlines last week and that some carriers had volunteered planes for the evacuation. But, he added, the demand was great enough for Mr. Austin to order more airlines to honor their obligations under the reserve fleet program.
Civilian planes would not fly into or out of Kabul, where a rapidly deteriorating security situation has hampered evacuation flights. Instead, commercial airline pilots and crews would help transport thousands of Afghans who are arriving at U.S. bases in Bahrain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

In the early 1980s while stationed at Mather AFB I was part of a cadre of experienced navigators assigned as CRAF augmentes. Granted this before GPS added navigation, but still it was an interesting additional, on call, additional duty because we reviewed taking various aircraft to remote places with minimal Nav aids, normal flight planning support, and then recovering using World War II era procedures.
On an annual basis I spent a couple of duty days in San Francisco International airport attending aircraft familiarization and currency training - a nice break from teaching student navigators.
Was never activated but it was interesting.
Is CRAFT still active? Until today I didn't know; but now I know and find it worrisome.
Drop them off in Saudi Arabia!

This is not going to turn out well. Unfamiliar landings on a runway without proper ground crews and surrounded by small arms and heavy machine guns in the hands of terrorists with little command and control is a recipe for disaster.
What should happen in each State where planeloads of Afghan refugees/illegal aliens are sent (mostly to conservative blue States I’m sure, to attempt to shift the demographic balance), those States should immediately load them onto chartered by the State planes, then flown and dropped off into blue States (highly recommend Wash. D.C., our Capitol, gets the most; followed by NY, NJ, CA, Wash.State, OR, MN) and left there.
Give no warning to these blue States (just as the Biden regime has been doing with south of the border illegal aliens, flying them into red States in the dead of the night). Just load them up, fly them right out of conservative States, and unload them in most any given blue state and their cities. Fight fire with fire.
Have volunteer watchdogs (such as like-minded folks already working at airports) give the alarm when illegals/Afghan migrants are being dropped off, find out where they are being housed or stop them at the airports themselves and immediately fly them to any blue State as fast as they come in. Got a better idea? I’d love to hear them. Any idea that can work.
