CNN: Paul Ryan to enter GOP's civil war by criticizing Trump's hold on party

Former House Speaker Paul Ryan is set to criticize former President Donald Trump and his hold on the Republican Party during a speech Thursday night, according to excerpts obtained by CNN.

Ryan, a critic of the former President in the past, is expected to say at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California, that Republicans must move away from the "populist appeal of one personality" because "then we're not going anywhere."

"Once again, we conservatives find ourselves at a crossroads. And here's one reality we have to face: If the conservative cause depends on the populist appeal of one personality, or on second-rate imitations, then we're not going anywhere. Voters looking for Republican leaders want to see independence and mettle," Ryan is expected to say.

Punchbowl News was first to report the excerpts.

Although Ryan doesn't mention Trump by name in his criticism, the expected remarks by the Republican Party's 2012 vice presidential nominee will add him to a growing list of establishment Republicans who are publicly objecting to Trump's grip on the party.

They are aware no one in the base of the GOP likes Paul Ryan right?

GFY Paul Ryan. You were and remain the very worst of what our once proud Party was and will again be when the likes of you and others just like you are dismissed and ignored.

Good grief...these a-holes still think it’s about Trump and not the dissatisfaction of the swamp GOPe (like Ryan). Trump just tapped into/verbalized it.

“populist appeal of one personality”

This doosh can’t see beyond the beak he’s always getting wet. He has no clue of what’s happening across the nation, he only projects his bias on the inside of his bubble.

I can see him running in 2024.

Vainglorious wanker.

His performance as Speaker gives him ZERO standing with 95% of the Republican Party. Boehner has already shot his mouth off too. This only SOLIDIFIES Trump support. All we need is Dennis Hastert for the the trifecta. Denny? Denny? Where are you Denny?

There is no ‘civil war.’ Republican voters are actually surprisingly unified.

There is, however, a bit of a mutiny going on. Republican voters are finally realizing the leadership they’ve been saddled with for the last two-decades hasn’t been representing their interests and they’re looking to remedy that.

Don’t forget that Paul Ryan was one of the main architects ion the Seditious Conspiracy to Overthrow the United States Presidency, then he used every dirty trick he could to Prevent the Truth from coming out. He should have been swinging from a rope 4 years ago for his part.

Paul Ryan and his fellow travelers are a big part of the reason that Trump has a hold on the party.

I hope he does. He can compete with Carly Fiorina for 2%.

Republican leaders want to see independence and mettle,” Ryan is expected to say.

Humm, two character traits sadly lacking in this POS.

Paul Ryan is the enemy of our cause. A 2 faced back stabbing double agent, as treasonous as any swamp member in existence.

And those are his good points.

Between Paul Ryan and Jeff Sessions recusing himself from the scam Russia hoax they squandered the first 2 years of Trump’s presidency.

Ryan has ignored the Tea Party movement since its inception. Trump didn’t. That explains a lot why Trump is liked.
