Tacoma police continued their search on Tuesday for a man who is accused of stabbing a local store owner and his son because the suspect refused their requests to wear a face mask.
Jin Hyun, 33, said the confrontation with the unidentified shopper escalated quickly.
“It angers me still," Hyun said. "At the same time, but because my dad and I are OK. We’re still here. That helps me to release that anger and move on.”
Tacoma police say they are still investigating the attack and trying to work up a description of the suspect.
The younger Hyun suffered wounds to his stomach, which he held while speaking to KOMO News on Tuesday about the incident, which occurred about 2:15 p.m. Monday at The Corner Store, located in the 600 block of North K Street.
He said he asked his attacker to wear a mask in their store several times before the suspect responded with a tirade expletives. As Hyun was escorting him outside, the confrontation turned violent.
“I reminded him, ‘Sir next time, you come into the store, have your mask on,'" Hyun said. "And he became upset, pulled out his knife stabbed me.”
Tacoma police continued their search for a man who allegedly stabbed a father and son inside a convenience store.
Hyun’s father tried to intervene, but the attacker turned the knife on the elder Hyun.
“The guy was just stabbing him, and I was trying to knock the guy over,” the younger Hyun said. “I was screaming, 'Someone help my dad!' He’s bleeding. The crazy thing is he just walked away like nothing happened.”
The violent incident at the convenience store is the latest in a series of violent episodes that have been reported recently in Tacoma.
On Sunday, two people were murdered in a shooting on South Tacoma Way.On Friday night, there was another double shooting on 88th Avenue.
Officials with Safe Street Campaign weighed in on the violence, pointing to the COVID pandemic as a big factor along with easy access to weapons. The organization said it’s working with the city and county to invest resources for mental health help.
“So, it’s a combination," said Priscilla Lisicich, executive director of the group. "There’s weapons, depression and anxiety, and then also people not knowing how to manage their emotions and resolve conflict.”
When Hyun returned to work Tuesday, he was greeted with notes, kind words, love and support from the community.
“I teared up," he said. "It shows the community’s love. I’m overwhelmed by it. I’m overwhelmed.”
As for the attacker who got away, Hyun had a simple message to him.
“Wear your mask,” said Hyun.
No description of the perp, meaning Amish.
6 blocks from my house.
Reports in the neighborhood are that a bar full of patron across the street watched the whole stabbing incident and ... did nothing.
No big deal. I mean kids have been having knife fights for eons...

I hear that the Ocean is going to rise.
It might be a good time to move....
Hyun is wrong, no one needs to wear a mask and he shouldn’t have harassed the guy to put one on. Hyun is also insane.
Parts, yes. 6th and K, not so much. Plenty of $800K houses.
Just a friendly remonder that even when Amidhnattack Asians it is because of white supremacy. An academic told us so.
Being Washington State, Hyun would probably get fined by the state into penury for letting an unmasked person into his store.
Our local grocery store in California got fined $13,000 by the state for various COVID offenses even though they were the first to take extreme (and very silly) precautions. Failure to comply can bankrupt you.
“Tacoma police say they are still investigating the attack and trying to work up a description of the suspect.”
How do you ‘work up’ a description?
More like they were working up the nerve to say he was black.
A umaskhole
Weird that we have all these details about the crime, but police still don't seem to have a description of the perp. How is the community supposed to help law enforcement solve this crime?
Surveillance cameras caught the attack on video and Hyun believes police should have a good view of the suspect’s face.
I don't understand why the police are having such a hard time "working up a description" of the perp.
Well, to start, everyone in Tacoma is a suspect.
Not women, 50% less.
Only “Amish”, 86 or so % kiss.
Go from there. Age, handicapped, etc. deleted. Probably a manageable number of suspects if the cops really want to id the perp. That a big IF.
I haven’t worn a mask in SE Washington stores for over 3 months. They can’t make you enforce it against customers, only your employees.

“
If they were to just go against the insurgents, it’d be simple...
Walla Walla and smaller towns were a joy to visit last month.

My money says the perp is a registered democrat.
