Karl Marx and Charles Spurgeon’s Epic Struggle for Souls (Marx: "Abolish the Family")

There are two gravesites I have made a habit of visiting whenever I am in London. The first lies in North London at Highgate Cemetery. Among the 53,000 buried there, one finds a few notables: Michael Faraday, inventor of the electric motor, and Adam Worth, the real-life basis for Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s evil Moriarty in the Sherlock Holmes stories, are two. Most notable of all is the resting place, a monument really, of Karl Marx. Though Prussian, Marx lived in London the last 34 years of his life. There he refined his radical secular ideology and produced Das Kapital, setting loose upon the world ideas that have wrecked half of it and now threaten to wreck the other half.

The second gravesite lies in South London at West Norwood Cemetery. Among the 42,000 graves there, one also finds a few men of renown: Paul Julius Baron von Reuter, founder of the global news organization of the same name, and Hiram Maxim, inventor of the first portable fully automatic machine gun, are interred here. Perhaps more illustrious than either of these is the grave of Charles Spurgeon. The “Prince of Preachers,” Spurgeon was the 19th century’s British equivalent of Billy Graham. He pastored what was allegedly the largest church congregation in the world.

It is extraordinary to me that Karl Marx (1818–83) and Charles Spurgeon (1834–92) lived and worked in the same city at the same time. Both were, in a sense, evangelists contending for the souls of men with their competing visions of humanity. Moreover, they were at the height of their powers at the same time. While Marx was preaching salvation through bloody revolution, Spurgeon, on the other side of the city, was preaching salvation through the blood and grace of Jesus Christ.

God made him so but Sprugeon is one of greatest gospel preachers this side of the apostle Paul. I have to have many passwords at work and the name Sprugeon is always one. I love him and his love of Christ. Persecuted too.

Now they’re separated by a gulf, I suspect, where neither can cross over to the other. Wonder if Marx has reconsidered the eternal value of the message he preached while alive in London, or perhaps he’s been occupied by other things.

Thank you!
A thoughtful and well documented read.

Spurgeon’s ‘Morning and Evening Devotional’ is one of my favorites.
You can experience, in its clarity, the Gospel Truths!

The US may not be the Judeo Christian nation it once was........but there is still a ‘remnant’
We know who WINS in the end........
....and now, Marx knows who doesn’t

Hiram Maxim’s brother, Hudson Maxim, lived in Hopatcong, a small town in New Jersey near Lake Hopatcong. Hiram Maxim was the inventor of smokeless gun powder. The town named a school after Hudson Maxim.

Possibly the greatest gospel preacherthis side of the apostle Paul. I love him so and his great love for Christ and constantly pointing people to Him was àwesome. But God gets all the glory. One of my passwords at work is Sprugeon.

Correction:
Hudson Maxim invented smokeless gunpowder.

Hiram Maxim invented the portable Machine Gun.
The gun was referred to as “The Maxim Gun.”
