You’re going to give up taking the chance at hundreds of millions in gold because you’re worried a park ranger might find you?

Not me.

FBI has become the taxpayer-funded Mafia.

Yes. These treasure deposits where not just buried so that someone could easily dig it up with a shovel. Story is some of them may have even been boobie trapped. Read the book rebel gold it is very interesting. Bottom line is even if found it was stolen from the feds so one can’t keep it anyways. This is not the first time this has happened the white sands treasure was taken by the feds also.

Should anything shock us these days about the potential corruption one could dig up with a little digging thru the FBI archives for what else they have found?

They’ll never find Trent Lott’s spine tho.. bet ya a bag of bullion.

There were rumors about the Donner Party burying and hiding gold as they starved to death asking “Who’s for Dinner?”.

I think there is a book about that the gold event with 2 modern day women as the heroines with the FBI involved.

These guys are far from naive, they did not stumble upon this treasure. They knew how to find and follow the markers that still exist in order to find it. Rebel Gold or one of his names was Jessie James go into some details about the markers.

For anyone interested the Nashville cache has never been found. Some of the markers still exist for the Nashville cache, but from what I understand the sherif runs of treasure hunters in the area most believe it to be.

In the UK they will be paid a fair market price for anything found of historical interest. Valuable stuff that isn’t of historical interest they can keep. The UK promotes treasure hunting.

In the U.S. you are right - better to just pocket what you find. Although lots of public places are off-limits to metal detecting from the get-go.

That’s a lot more than the haul found by Blondie (with the aid of Bill Carson) in the grave marked “Unknown,” right beside Arch Stanton.

Reminds me of when LUCY went uranium hunting in the Nevada desert.

The secrecy could indicate agents and workers made off with some or all of the gold and they don't want to officially acknowledge the find.

If the gold was the governments to begin with and the FBI found it and returned it to the government then how is that stealing?

This reminds me, for some reason, of an old Phil Harris/Alice Faye radio show. Phil’s boozer buddy Remley got hold of an old treasure map, so they go out digging for it. There’s sounds of digging and then “clunk” as they hit something. All excited, Remley yells it’s a round silver plate with writing on it. Harris, all agog, yells “What’s it say? What’s it say?’

There’s a pregnant pause and then Remley says, “Pontiac.”

The FBI was well within its rights to confiscate the gold if it believed it was destined for the U.S. Mint.

Or: Would that not be under the jurisdiction of the Secret Service? At any rate, there would be no reason for such secrecy.
