The D.C. National Guard chief on Wednesday told lawmakers he would have “immediately” activated his forces to assist U.S. Capitol Police on Jan. 6 if his authority had not been restricted by the Pentagon.

“I would have sent them there immediately as soon as I hung up,” Commanding Gen. William Walker told lawmakers on the Senate Rules Committee and Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee at a hearing evaluating the security breakdown that occurred when a pro-Trump mob attacked the Capitol.

“My next call would have been to my subordinate commanders, to get every single guardsman in this building and everybody that's helping the Metropolitan Police...to the Capitol, without delay."

Something very important is being missed. I heard one of them testify that the military didn’t act on the request for National Guard because they were hesitant after the (Democrat) criticism they had received after protecting the White House from attackers.

They’ve already testified that the democrats, who didn’t want the White House protected, in effect prevented them from protecting the Capitol.

“ONLY the DC National Guard is under direct command of the US President.”
and you responded:
“That’s not accurate. He is the Commander in Chief.”

Well, you are wrong. It is accurate. The 50 state National Guard entities are under the control of state governors as per the Constitution.

Nor is it accurate to say that Walker is a commanding general who can take command of his troops at any time. Until they are activated, he has no authority over them in their civilian status.

The DC Guard, as well as the Guard units in Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Virgin Islands, not being states, are under federal control. They have separate and for the layman very different authorities, mobilizations, andchains of command.

Walker has no governor to respond to. And the DC mayor, Capitol police, Metropolitan police have no authority over the Guard.

Walker, however, should have had contingency plans and pre-mobilization orders on hand, so that his call to the proper agent could have immediately activated his units. Even then there would have been hours of delay. Guardsmen aren’t hanging around the firehouse - they’re at their regular jobs.

You misunderstand. In regards to the National Guard, The President, uniquely has command over the DC National Guard- no one else (certainly not the “mayor” of DC, Bowser the moron.

Am well aware of what the CIC of US Military has the power to do- and it is a lot more than what the public is generally aware of, his emergency powers etc.

Governors have command over each State’s national Guard units to order them up- each State having a commander. The President commands Gen. Walker, the commander of the DC National Guard. As a courtesy he offered 10,0000 National Guards from DC and other States who agreed— offered it to Natzi Pelousi, and she refused it, along with McConnell of course.

Problem with Walker’s story is that the Pentagon had previously offered on Jan 2 to send troops in to assist the Cap Hill police on Jan 6 and were waved off.

January 2, 2021 : (DoD official reaches out to USCP Dpty Chief Sean Gallagher to see if Natl Guard troops were going to be requested) According to a timeline of the siege laid out $, an official from the Defense Department reached out to Deputy Chief Sean Gallagher of the USCP on Jan. 2, 2021 seeking information as to whether National Guard troops were going to be requested, however Gallagher rejected the offer after consulting with then-USCP Chief Steven Sund.
