The Marine Corps is looking for industry sources to produce a man-portable system capable of launching swarms of kamikaze drones over contested battlefields, according to a new notice.
In a request for information published earlier this month, Marine Corps System Command detailed a fresh need for an "individually operated, man-portable, anti-materiel, anti-personnel ground-launched loitering munition system" for fielding to grunts in the coming years.
The so-called Organic Precision Fire-Infantry (OPF-I) capability will consist of a fresh infantry-operated system capable of launching drones that can conduct explosive strikes and are "capable of swarming" over a 20-kilometer range for up to an hour and a half, according to the notice.

If I was in the marines and a billion drones were swarming towards me, my death would result from being shot in the back for desertion after I dropped my gun and ran like hell!!
Which is why I never joined the military :)
I’m a world renowned coward. Took the Gold in the Coward Olympics.
I keep it over my bed.
What could possibly go wrong.
“What could possibly go wrong.”
It’s the battlefield of the future. Low cost, highly efficient weapons that are manned by personnel hundreds of miles, if not thousands of miles away.
Heh - cool!
Unmanned.
Trailer hundreds in stacks behind a Hummer, and the Private launches the all.
Unmanned. Recognize opposition equipment down to the rifle, and swoop in for the kill.
Answer: slow flight (and long time of flight) and small payload - or really large, heavy system with a pricetag per shot north of $250K per shot.
But I am sure the vendors' White Papers will describe super capable systems - but whoever is accepted will take years to make something and go way over budget in the process. The usual tapdance.
The infantry doesn't need a 20-mile system - there are other systems to attack long range targets. The infantry's points of interest are from 4 km to right in front of them, and they need powerful effects immediately, not nine minutes later.
This is what you get when you promote guys to General Officer with Physical Education degrees.
Kamikaze drones? What is the meaning of that— no human would fly.. DRONES. So they could never be SUICIDAL. Unless they mean sacrificed drones (which would be all drones status ultimately vs. putting US combatants at risk).
Maybe they just mean a focused SWARM of EXPENDABLE drones.
Would buy that notion. Cheap and effective. Like the nano drones that filmed in real time— the false counting of ballots in FULTON COUNTY Arena, Atlanta on Nov3, and 4th.
You mean like this?:

I know companies that already make this. I have seen videos. Nasty co-coordinated simultaneous attacks of 100 drones. How do you stop that?
100 guys with shotguns.
Kamikaze means “Divine Wind”. So it’s a little more accurate than you think.
Think about flying mines. You don’t have to step on them, they are packaged in buried or camouflaged dispensers which detect your movements. Once launched like a swarm of hornets, they each have just enough sensor fidelity and pattern-recognition intelligence to discriminate vulnerable areas on human targets. They find you quickly and mess up your day. They don’t have to fly more than a few yards so they can be very small and very numerous.
I’m pretty confident that right now, counter-measures to the above are being at least brainstormed, if not developed and tested. I wonder what they are coming up with.
Or flamethrowers.
I’m sure a Biden administration would love to use slaughterbots on recalcitrant gun owners.
