They ought to give them pay raises for optimizing their circumstances.

Absolutely, they should be forced to stay in the area they helped flush into the sewer.

I can already hear it: “That’s not how we did it in ‘ the bay area’.”. Standby for heavy rolls to starboard.

You know, after reading the article, I'm somewhat on the companies' side on this. It doesn't make sense to pay a San Francisco salary for a Dubuque cost of living.
Hopefully, this is a longstanding company policy, or there could be lawsuits.

What if I "move" to a mail drop box in San Jose (while really living in Alabama). Since all they have is a mailing address and a Bay Area cell phone number how will they know. And even paying Kookifornia taxes would be less than the pay cut. About the only problem would be insurance with is pretty regional based. And if they look at medical treatment and see a lot more "bit by possum" rather than "stepped on a needle hidden in human feces".

A huge portion of most folks negotiated salary is cost of living of the location of the office where the work is going to be performed.
What did you think? You would negotiate to live/work in San Fran and then work from home in Omaha?
Stupid as fook covid snowflakes.

I had a guy working for me in Palo Alto 20 years ago. It was obscenely expensive then. He moved to a new satellite office we opened in North Carolina and he kept his CA salary in NC. He lived like royalty. It always seemed like a bad decision to me, but I was overruled by my boss and his boss. We didn’t want to lose the guy.
I’m both not surprised and surprised that these companies are trying this.

The funny thing is East Coast based remote workers who end up a with a Silicon Valley gig feel like they hit a gold mine.

it’s not a pay cut if their cost of living goes down, and if their original employment contract didn’t include a clause for up-and-WFH’ing ... then ... sorry employees.
