GOP Appears Ready to Cave on $600-a-Week Unemployment Benefit

Senate Republicans and Democratic leaders are huddled in the White House this weekend looking for a deal on a coronavirus relief package that can pass both the House and Senate as well as being signed by the president.

With the enhanced federal unemployment benefit of $600 a week expiring on Friday, the Republicans now appear willing to extend that benefit for the short term — several weeks at least. The Senate wants to bring an unemployment benefits bill to the floor as early as next week, but Democrats are balking. They want the whole $3 trillion package they passed in the House or nothing.

Democrats are calculating that Donald Trump is so desperate for a deal that he will eventually be forced to give in to Democratic demands and approve a sizable chunk of that $3 trillion. It includes increasing food stamp aid, monies for state and local governments with virtually no strings attached, and aid for beleaguered renters and homeowners on the verge of being evicted.

It will also include $1200 payments to individuals — another top Trump priority.

Amen brother. Assume you’re also in tech. The only job “offers” I get are fake ones from Indian headhunters to rule me out as too expensive or somehow unqualified so they can hire an H1B or OPT instead.

Of course it will be Trump’s fault if he’s President. If he isn’t, I suppose some sort of forgiveness will be passed.

Biden’s (and democrats running against republican congressmen and senators) political ads playing here are constantly talking about the unemployment rate we have today under Trump. This $600 to bribe Americans not to seek work is only to keep the jobless rate an issue.

Of course we here at FR are informed enough to understand where it was before Covid-19 and the accomplishments of President Trump. Obviously those ads are not explaining any of that.

Don’t do it unless it’s payments just to the permanently disabled and elderly, who have no way to adjust to higher food prices. Send workers back to work.

Six months is 3 months too long to stay shuttered. If we are to expect a CCPVirus winter wave, we’ve got 4 months left to make a year’s worth of income. If we don’t open businesses now, a trillion in loans to keep them open are for naught!!

Once again the Republicans use The Art od War as their textbook. Unfortunately the author of their version is French General Maurice Gamelin instead of Sun Tzu.

Capitulation...the GOP theme song.

They don’t call the GOP the Surrender Party for nothing.

We also know that Trump was running almost a Trillion dollar deficit every year bribing the public before covid. Don't act like everything was running smooth. He doesn't even mention the debt and deficit anymore.

I don’t want them running up this bill on our kids.

The bill is now irrelevant because it will never be paid back in current US dollars. Probably in crypto-Ameros, at about 1/25th of today's value.

I’ve heard that the democrat voters do a much better job contacting / expressing their opinions to their representatives via phone, email, Facebook and Twitter much much more than republicans do. With all their faults (and there are tons) Democrat/Liberal/Leftist voters do get an A+ for their activism. At best the republican counterparts get a D- to F.

Your republican representatives hear more from them than they do from us. Don’t believe me? Go to your representatives’ Facebook and Twitter pages.

The government closed the economy. Millions are facing eviction because they can't pay rent/mortgage. The entire travel industry is near bankruptcy. I was in Charleston, SC earlier in the week and it is a ghost town - no one - absolutely no one was there. Later in the week, I stayed at a hotel in a different area and 10 rooms out of 427 were occupied. The airline industry has 10% of the traffic it did a year ago. The government estimated this week that airline traffic will not be back to pre pandemic levels until 2024 - yes you read that correctly - 2024. The government added a year from the original estimate of 2023 because the recovery is not as fast as they anticipated.

The government caused it and the government should be required to bail out people and all kinds of industry - that is only fair.

Further, if Republicans vote no, then they will lose both the Senate and the presidency...it is just that simple.

I'm OK but many people aren't - don't be unaware of what is happening.

The pain is going to get much worse before it gets better. If Trump gets reelected, he will be dealing with the aftermath of this government made disaster for most of his 4 remaining years. What colossal insanity to ever shut down.

I want Trump to stand tough on bailing out cities and states, but everything else is fair game.

Republicans Cave?

Say it isn’t so.

The feckless Party has a long history of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

It is all a matter of perspective. I quit voting “FOR” Republicans long ago. I do vote against every Democrat on the Ticket.

Yes I’m in tech. Even so-called entry-level positions not qualified for. New trick is requiring ERM application experience only available through employment in Indian companies like Cognizant, InfoSys or Wipro. Or TOEFL scores (I’m a native born American an a native American English speaker. Why the F will I even need to take a TOEFL exam?

And Dalit recruiters have started to move from App development into games development and corporate training.

Why don’t they just give everybody a military desk job and put them on the Pentagon payroll? The GOP never has a problem with defense spending of any amount, at any level. So labeling unemployment payments as military spending will give both sides a win.

“the government should be required to bail out..”

Government does not have the funding. It comes from our kids. They’re borrowing from our kids. Each kid owes the government 250 k plus their student loans that the government took over and jacked up the price on

The adults need to come in and explain that. And make this stop
