Since WWII, the rise of the centralized nanny-state, but especially after Watergate - the Attorney General is the most important office in Federal Government. The DOJ is the brain and political nerve center of Fed.gov. On a lower level, why has George Soros so aggressively targetted putting progressives/leftists in DA and AG positions? Because they control the law, police, who gets investigated and charged by the State, at all levels.
Every President had to have a completely loyal AG, or they were done. Joe Sr. made sure JFK appointed his own brother. Reagan had long-term pal Ed Meese. Obama had two fellow travelers as AG to push his social-engineering agenda. He even made sure both were black.
Trump’s first AG pick nearly destroyed his Presidency from the start.
