NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) Hundreds of people have been moved from homeless shelters to an Upper West Side hotel.
Neighbors say they were barely given notice and now they are upset.
Bused in from Downtown, 283 men who are experiencing homelessness arrived at their new Upper West Side address: The Lucerne Hotel on West 79th Street.
The Lucerne is the latest luxury hotel to become a temporary homeless shelter.
Some neighbors told CBS2s Nick Caloway they were angry. Others said they were scared.
Im worried about whether there are going to be a lot of homeless men just hanging around on the street, said neighbor Jamie Berg.
I have no problem taking care of these people, OK? I have no problem. But to put them at my back door, I am petrified. I am really petrified, a neighbor named Carolee said.
Neighbors say they werent told about the decision until late last week. They had no input and no choice.
Its not right that we didnt have any say, that they were just put here, said Robert Montano.
Well as soon as I knew, they knew, said City Councilmember Helen Rosenthal.
Rosenthal said the citys shelters are too crowded, often sleeping two dozen people in a room. So the city has been emptying its shelters, placing thousands of people in hotels to reduce the spread of the virus.
The most important thing is that the people here have access to the treatment that they need. These are people with mental health issues, with addiction issues, Rosenthal said.
Its those issues that make neighbors nervous.

The bill will go to FEMA, but the decision came from City Hall.
When liberalism comes to your back door...it's not so pretty anymore.
Ha ha ha! You get what you vote for, NYC libtards.

But are they upset enough to vote Republican? I doubt it.
I’d love to go interview people about this, and have an assistant look up their voter registration and party contributions and every single liberal who squawks about this, I’d seriously want to slap them upside the head with a stinky fish. “This is what you elected your leaders to do. Why are you complaining?”
They’re all for helping those in ‘need’ (never an actual US citizen family, mind you...) unless it comes to their doorstep.
What a shame! I stayed at the Lucerne many years ago.
It was a grand hotel, in the European tradition.
I have stayed at the Lucerne on several occasions...a very nice place with a good restaurant. I wonder if all these hotels will ever be able to come back from this, or if they have essentially turned themselves into SROs and not travelers will stay there in the future. Of course, thats if they ever let us travel again.
Y’all had fun voting these commies in office, now y’all can have fun living with the consequences. Effing NIMBY hypocrites.
Section 8 and “affordable” housing and homeless and halfway house shelters are okay to be forced into or near middle and working class neighborhoods, but don’t dare come near the homes of the elite in the UWS.

But we are supposed to trust the polls
Elections have consequences. Who knew?
Keep voting Democrat.
and when it’s time for them to leave? try and get ‘em out...

Now, that right there, is an interesting turn of phrase.
Back during the Clinton administration, HUD turned a motel into a half-way house for drug abusers. When the locals protested, HUD took them to court claiming their rights to peacefully protest were subordinate to the rights of the drug abusers. Finally, the exhausted locals agreed to drop their suits when they no longer had the money to fight city hall. The locals were forced to host a welcoming block party for the drug abusers. HUD even forced the locals to provide lists of refreshments, food, entertainment and speakers to ensure the drug abusers really were welcomed into the neighborhood. This was extensively reported in the WSJ.
