Hell NJ and NH are not far enough. I don’t want them coming south. Enough of these commies run from the crap they created in the big city slums and then come here and try to recreate the slums they created up there. NC, VA, SC, Fla, Atlanta, all used to be southern cities. Not anymore. Atlanta is just another eastern city with all these commies moving down there. It is growing and growing. All the small cities outside Atl are now just becoming part of the growing monster of Atlanta. One day, in the near future, my fear is that Atlanta alone, just like Seattle-Tacoma, will cause all the state to become a Commie state and you can count GA gone. Same thing is going to happen to Florida and Texas and Arizona. As the illegals flood those states, they are becoming commie voters and they will in time take over. The conservative side is growing older and we do not have the same number of young folks as the leftist have. They have educated our youth into nut brains. My three kids were mostly in Military schools over seas and schools next to military bases. No matter what I have done or tried, as they have grown older, the worse they got at being commie beliefs. They think that everyone should have the same as the rich. That why do they have to work 10 hours a day for peanuts while the rich get rich. They were taught better at home. The damned schools screwed them up. I have washed my hands of my adopted son because he has become a complete utter A-hole. Thinks military folks are just baby killers. I threw him out of my home and told him never to come back. To hell with his commie thoughts.

Yeah, as an ex NJ guy (45 yrs) I have to agree. But it is a great example of relativity when you consider the NYC cost of living versus a very large part of NJ.

Somewhere with myriad 10-20 mile stretches of deep forest, slough and poison ivy on both sides of the straight, easily-blocked road.
Somewhere with screens of trees and brush hiding the presence of other homes in the woods.
Somewhere with easily-blocked side roads that dead end in a well-defended homestead in the forest.
Somewhere with few gas stations and those holding competent armed personnel.
I do get your point, though. We left our hilly refuge of 45 years after the influx of Karens/SJWs/progs reached a tipping point. It took about 30 years.
We’re old, now, and hope our new home will stay safe for at least the 10-12 functional years we have left.
This is exactly how I feel, and I’m not smack dab in the middle of all of the chaos in Chicago.
Ideally, I’d like a minimum of five acres (20+ if I’m truly being ideal), a house just big enough for me, my husband and my dog, and maybe a guest room, with a large garage for tinkering. Wooded would be great, but I’ll also take anything I can get. As far from the road and other people as possible.
Even the suburbs here are bonkers. There really are no words for how things are going.

Right now President Trump is at his golf club in Bedminster New Jersey it is in a beautiful area west of New York City. It is quite pricey as it is horse country. If you go a little farther west than Bedminster, you will come to some counties in New Jersey that are made up of small towns where there are plenty of American flags waving and even Trump signs.
Most people don’t want to leave the area entirely, if they have friends family etc.
Sure some will flee for west or south, but many will settle in New Jersey. The Real Estate sales in these areas are proving this.
More and more properties in NY are for sale while less and less homes for sale in Jersey.
Anyone stuck in the middle class. Those who have remote jobs, those who decided to retire from teaching or police

Spoke to a man in Walmart the other day, talked about Trump, he said he never voted for Trump in 2016 but he said the democrats and what they stand for scare him and will vote for Trump this time around.
Left of center/centrists/old school liberals, etc are afraid of what the Extreme Left wants

I made the decision select my residence on politically conservative grounds years ago. So, LOL, I have to agree with you.
That is exactly the move we made—twenty years ago—love it here....still as rural today as it was the day we moved in...

If I were really poor, lived in one of those blue city hellholes, and lived in low income or public housing, because I HAD to, I’d save every nickel I could, sell everything I could, and buy a bus ticket to a red state, apply for emergency housing, and fall on the mercy of The Salvation Army to get as much help as I could. Even in red cities and states, there’s often crime in low income housing areas, but NOTHING could be as bad as what people in NYC, etc., have to put up with. Our little town of 3,000 even has public housing, and yes, our town has a little bit of low level crime, but on the other hand, we’ve left our keys in the door overnight several times, or left our detached garage open, and we’ve never had a problem. And we’re a very poor town, except for a few blocks “up on the hill”. Oh, and being a strong 2nd amendment state, just about EVERYONE has at least one gun.

Well, yeah, but he don’t seem to be the type. He wants to coast thru life and take no static or put himself out...in case he happens to believe in something...
SOMEONE at SOME POINT is going to HAVE to put together that militia. The able-bodied have to start getting used to that fact-if they care about preserving law and order.
There is always going to be someone to take the place, especially if that place is a place holder of stupidity. 8>)
If I were coming to the DC area today with this kind of profile, I'd probably opt for an outer ring suburb too. Get an hour out of town and you can find any number of perfectly gracious small towns, not yet fully absorbed by the Borg. I'd probably opt for somewhere reasonably close to the end of the metro line, or MARC or VRE, to make it easy to get into city when needed without fighting traffic.
This doesn't work if you have to come into the office, which most still do. The question then becomes central vs. suburban. That's a pick your poison question. The worst solution in my book is to buy a long suburban commute. Those people are spending four to six hours a day in their cars, and a lot longer if someone in the DMV has a flat tire or fender bender and the region gridlocks. Again. For the nth time this week.
For an office worker as opposed to a home worker, the only good reason to live in the far suburbs is if your employer is a beltway bandit and you work in a suburban office park. If that's the case, live in the 'burbs, close to your work, and whatever you do, don't buy a commute that forces you to cross a river. There are nice neighborhoods all over the metro area. Find one near your work. The way to live decently in any major urban area is to live mostly within a good neighorhood and its environs.
It would be interesting to know what part of DC this author is fleeing. From the tone of his article, it sounds as if he's in a still-transitioning area. It also sounds as if he's a night owl; my advice would be to euthanize the %#@! dog and be home at a reasonable hour. I live on Capitol Hill and it's pretty safe, but wandering around on foot at 1 a.m. is probably not a good habit to get into. The H Street corridor on the northern edge of the Hill has become a happening place with a lot of nightlife; the areas to the north including Trinidad and Carver Langston are still transitioning, and there is a problem with predators targeting drunk yuppies staggering home in the wee hours. The author mentions Barracks Row (8th Street S.E. opposite the Marine Barracks), which is fine, but there is a a city "social services" center left over from pre-gentrification days that draws some loitering on 8th street near the Eastern Market metro station. That center needs to be moved; it no longer reflects the neighborhood and is drawing its clients from elsewhere in the city (but they hang around pandhandling or dozing in the branch library, having nothing else do do with their day). As far as gangs of teenagers causing trouble right after school dismissal, that hasn't been a problem on the Hill since Hine Middle School was closed years ago (and replaced by a large, very upscale residential building with groundfloor retail including a Trader Joe's). So I wonder what part of town he's frequenting. But wherever he is, he should get rid of the dog and be at home at 1:00 a.m., or Uber back if he's out late.
DC continues to gentrify rapidly. This will continue because suburban traffic is a nightmare and will only get worse. (No, the roadbuilders cannot solve the problem; the roadbuilders haven't yet caught up with the 1980's and they fall farther behind every year.) Neighborhoods that were considered no-go areas a few years ago are flipping fast. I lived through the Capitol Hill gentrification miracle and have war stories to share, but that's now old history. Neighborhoods like Petworth, Shaw, Trinidad, Ivy City, Langdon, Eckington, Brentwood, U Street-Cardozo, Columbia Heights, etc. are now changing so fast that it makes your head spin. Even Anacostia ain't what it used to be. It is fun to watch. But don't be out walking your little dog at 1 a.m.
