Six distinct types of coronavirus have been identified by scientists in a breakthrough that promises to save lives by flagging the highest-risk patients.
Analysis of thousands of cases by artificial intelligence software has revealed different "clusters" of symptoms and ranked them in order of severity.
Headache and loss of smell are common to all six groupings, but the range of symptoms varies widely after that.
Scientists at King's College London (KCL) found that patients with the sixth type of Covid-19 are nearly 10 times more likely to end up needing breathing support than patients in the first group.
This is significant because often patients only deteriorate to a critical stage several days after after showing symptoms. The new ranking system should flag up the highest-risk cases and give doctors the opportunity to intervene earlier.
The findings, derived from KCL's symptom tracker app, used data from 1,600 users in the UK and US who have had confirmed Covid-19. The resulting algorithm was then tested on an independent cohort of 1,000 users in the UK, the US and Sweden.
"These findings have important implications for care and monitoring of people who are most vulnerable to severe Covid-19," said Dr Claire Steves from KCL.
"If you can predict who these people are at day five, you have time to give them support and early interventions such as monitoring blood oxygen and sugar levels, and ensuring they are properly hydrated simple care that could be given at home, preventing hospitalisations and saving lives."

The symptoms were as they describe for e coli.
The VA insisted I get tested, so I got swabbed today.
The article says that's "Category 3", if I have the "rona".
Well it's a cold, so...
“The resulting algorithm”?????
Stop, right there.
This is not about Medical Science but about Computer “science”.
There my be different strains of the virus. But computer analysis is not a substitute for medical understanding.
This is still more Insanity added to an already Insane landscape.
I read that 40% of Covid patients have GI problems as their only symptoms. I hope you recover quickly, whatever you have!
The median age of death is 80.
Not exactly the black death.
If they can find which strains are the strongest and treat those people faster and better, great.
An illness with a median age of death of 80 should not have UTTERLY destroyed the US economy and debt.
We are bouncing back fast but states are locking down again and the debt is there for good.
Yahoo news makes CNN look like amateurs
“An illness with a median age of death of 80 should not have UTTERLY destroyed the US economy and debt.”
Once it was apparent governments were not willing to follow through with isolation, after a long quarantine to ID the infected, all was lost.
The virus will take its course. And nothing will change that.
Open everything for the willing.
A lot of the research on treatments for the China virus may have to be redone. For instance, if HCQ were used on patients infected with the most severe strain, the results would not look favourable against a ‘control’ group consisting of those infected with the least-severe strain.
Also, if the least-severe strain is spreading faster than the most-severe strain (a reasonable assumption, since the less-severe strains don’t kill their hosts, and have a greater chance of spreading), that could explain much of the declining fatality rates.
Hope things go well for you.
This article and its headline are poorly written. Theyre really talking about six different symptom matrixes and not six different virus strains.
Well for most people, it really is a cold or nuttin’. I only wish it were that for the rest.
Thats a very sensible post:
The average life expectancy in the US is 78.54 years, so if WuFlu can extend your life a year and a half, I say bring it on!
HCQ/zinc/azithromycin ASAP. Waiting makes it ineffective. If the test comes back negative, no harm.
“I only wish it were that for the rest.” I’m in the “rest’ (80+)group.
I’ll take my chances. I’ll stay away from crowds unnecessarily. Not going to protests or concerts. Will ride my cycles on sunny days and take what comes.
Just before Christmas I had the worst gadtro I have vcv ever had. Ig was like being on Guadalcanal with dysentry. Urgent care doc said viral gastroenteritis and said go BRAT. Didn’t stop till three days later when everything stopped. Nothing, not matter, not gas, nothing. ER thought blockage but CT showed nothing except zero peristalisis. Three days on IV nothing by mouth and I was fair but no relief grom gastro which kicked up again. Took two weeks to get back to normal. My doc says she thinks it was COVID.
It could easily be something he ate. Especially if bought from a deli counter
‘Also, if the least-severe strain is spreading faster than the most-severe strain (a reasonable assumption, since the less-severe strains dont kill their hosts, and have a greater chance of spreading), that could explain much of the declining fatality rates.’
interesting take...could very well be...
I think that’s what my daughter had. Positive for Covid but had head ache, low fever, mild flu symptoms ... and the only person she spread it to was her fiance ... hmmmm ... anyway it hung on for a long boring stretch. She might be about done now.
I had 3 + 4
I was so sick that I was hallucinating.
Stay hydrated.
The good news is that of the most critical, only 3% need additional oxygen.
Will pray for wisdom for your physicians.
I know the feeling.
