'Disney World is the Coronavirus guinea pig': All eyes are on the theme park following its reopening in Florida

Following months of closing its gates to visitors due to the coronavirus pandemic, Disney World reopened in Orlando, Florida, on Saturday to mixed reactions. Some seemed thrilled on social media that the Happiest Place on Earth was open again, while others were panicked about what this could mean for the spread of COVID-19.

The reopening comes as cases of the virus continue to spike in Florida — the state saw a record 15,283 new cases on Saturday, according to data shared by the Florida Department of Health. In Orange County, where Disney World is located, there were 8,672 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the last 14 days, according to local government data from Thursday.

But the reopening of Disney World also raises questions about what will happen with California’s Disneyland in Anaheim. According to data released by the California Department of Public Health, the state has seen a seven-day average of 8,664 new cases of COVID-19 per day. In Orange County, where Disneyland is located, there were 969 new cases on Sunday, according to local government data.

The California theme park’s Downtown Disney District began a phased reopening on July 9. However, the hotels of the Disneyland Resort are still closed and will reopen at a later day, according to the official Disneyland website. “Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park remain closed and will reopen at a later date, pending state and local government approvals,” the site says. A Disney spokesperson also told Yahoo Life that the resort would share more details on reopening plans in the future.

Amusement parks probably should be the last things to reopen.

From what I heard, you had to book reservations for specific dates to visit, and were strictly limiting how many people were allowed in, so they could do social distancing.

And they are doing sanitation and cleaning as much as humanly possible on the premises.

So we will see.

I would be more concerned long term, how the “business model” of places like Disney will work, if they are only going to allow a small fraction of normal attendance to do social distancing.

Ditto for movie theaters, sports stadiums, concerts, when such facilities reopen. Can sports teams survive financially, if they can only fill 25% of the seats so they are doing social distancing in a stadium?

I'm not panicked, but I think opening the park was wrong. People have seen significant improvements over the last couple of months, have become complacent, and now - whammo! - the virus lives!

You need your head examined if you drag your family, kids, or grand kids to Disney in the Florida heat, walk miles in the park, all while wearing the muzzle mask, and pay for the privilege.

Personally, I do NOT trust the Disney Corporation’s motives.

25 percent maximum. Many stadiums are between 1/3 and half full and being full is the exception.

Well I am not worried about Disney World, I am pretty far from it and don’t feel like spending money when I need a cushion for an upcoming emergency and need to replenish emergency resources.

If ‘social distancing’ worked so great, the virus wouldn’t spreading like crazy in Florida.

For a Virus so deadly you have to get a test to find out if you even have it.

Why all the hysteria about Disney reopening? Universal Orlando has been open since the first of June, with nary a peep from the media.

Asking for a friend.

Curious why they aren’t worried about Universal or SeaWorld being opened weeks ago.

Why? The numbers of Covid cases out of Florida have been proven wrong (hyperinflated) by “mistakes” in counting. Florida is normal...

My theory about this is the MSM thinks Disney will scare more easily than NBC/Universal.

My daughter and two grandkids will be there at week’s end. I’ll join them, but not in any of the parks, for dinner one evening. Really looking forward to it!

If the number of cases go up in the next 1-60 days in any Red State, the MSM will blame this opening.

Cuz science and stuff.
