Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, warned members of Congress on Monday that the U.S. could reach 100,000 new COVID-19 cases per day if the country does not get a handle on the pandemic.
Speaking before the Senate health committee, Fauci said the country is heading in the “wrong direction as the average number of daily cases continues to go up.
“We’re going in the wrong direction if you look at the curves of the new cases,” said Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. “We need to do something about that and we need to do it very quickly.”
The U.S. is now recording 40,000 new cases per day, surpassing previous records set in April when New York was the epicenter of the outbreak.
Now outbreaks in Texas, Arizona, Florida and California account for 50 percent of new infections in the U.S.
Fauci stressed that the U.S. can’t just focus on those four states because outbreaks there "puts the entire country at risk."
Fauci declined to estimate potential COVID-19 deaths when pressed by Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), but said the situation is “going to be very disturbing, I will guarantee you that because when you have an outbreak in one part of the country, even though in other parts of the country they're doing well, they are vulnerable.”

Lots more testing is happening also. US citizens and legal residents crossing from Mexico are skewing the statistics in border states.

What about hospitalizations ICU admissions and deaths? cases alone mean nothing most are asymptomatic
It’s all about deaths not positive test results. We are averaging over 40K positives per day now but average for deaths per day is less than 500.
The ONLY people that need to be protected are the particular vulnerable to dying from the disease which are obviously the elderly and preexisting conditions.
Speaking of his age/health, what’s the deal with his voice? Sounds like he gargles with glass and smokes a carton of unfiltered cigarettes every day. I know many 80 year olds that don’t sound like that. Has he ever been asked what’s wrong with his voice?
Seriously. If Trump doesn’t kick this guy to the curb and start talking about death/hospitalization rates instead of total numbers of cases he’s going to be toast. His presidency won’t survive a second lockdown.

The little Faucist must be lacking for attention. We have treatments for this virus, correct? We don’t have a vaccine (may never have one) but we can treat those infected, just like people who get the flu. So the process should be to take precautions, stay at home when necessary, quarantine if you get sick and go to the hospital only if treatments aren’t effective. There’s no need for massive panic and shutdowns.
