Black Lives Matter NY President: Crime Needs To Be Looked At As A Health Issue, Not A Police Issue
RCP video ^ | 6-29-2020 | Tim Hains

(snip)

NEWSOME: Well, here's the thing: a lot of people don't understand how the streets or the people feel. I have an in-depth knowledge for this, I live in the Bronx, I live amongst the people.

... But if people keep seeing these images of their babies, of their relatives, of black people being killed, they keep dealing with financial inequality and inequity, and it reaches a point of frustration, then people lash out.

This is a matter of inevitability that people will lash out because they're feeling like they're backed into a corner....

NEWSOME: Well, what you have to understand is overtime -- how about this? I'm not encouraging people to go out and hurt other people. That's not what I'm promoting.

What I'm talking about is systemic inequality. What I'm talking about is America treating crime as -- as something that needs to be handled with policing instead of defunding the police and looking at crime from the perspective that it's a health crisis.

The same way we looked at heroin addiction when it was only black people as 'tough on drugs, war on crime.' We have -- and when it became white people, we looked at it as a public health crisis, as something that needs to be treated.

That's the way we need to look at crime, OK? ... Look at the causes of why people are committing crimes. They are desperate. They're poor. They're undereducated and they are left out to dry but this American system of government.

So if you want to decrease crime, you don't hire police to come in and arrest everybody and brutalize people. If you want to cure crime, then you must go to the source. You must invest in people, you must give people jobs.

Neither police issue nor health issue . . . it is a spiritual issue.

Was heroin really ever considered a ‘black drug’? I always that that was crack. Or maybe he’s going back before my time.

So he’s saying those that commit violent crimes are sick and should be quarantined for a very long time?

Crime is a criminal issue, regardless of what these criminals tell us.

don’t have police, or let police handle crimes (brutalize people were his words).

Just have American gubmint give people jobs, that will solve the root problem of systemic inequality.

“You must invest in people, you must give people jobs.”

$20 to $25 trillion and counting. How much “investment” is enough?

I never had a job “given” to me. I worked my tail off getting an education, learning skills, entering an industry at the bottom, and mastering that industry so I was a solid contributor. Job offers come from such skills. Jobs aren’t just “evening” away.

the people didn’t invest in themselves
They pissed away their time that was supposed to be used studying and learning

they pissed it away because THEY AND THEIR PEERS said that would be “acting white”

they instead wasted their educational years on sex, rap, hip hop, cars, games, bling, guns, and being pissed the world wasn’t handing them everything they wanted, and they learned to start blaming everyone else for their failings and inadequacies and why they feel those inner bad feelings like they can’t do anything, realizing they are dumb because they cant hide it that they pissed away their time to learn and now they are going to be behind others for a very long time

There's the issue. She's down playing her own people.
Give them something. They can't seek it on their own.

And what happens when the person is given a job and they refuse to accept it?

Does Newsome think the pimp or drug dealer is going to give up their lucrative enterprise for a menial job?

They’re uneducated because urban blacks view education as “acting white”. Because of that they live off welfare and crime. The rest of us can’t solve Black problems. No amount of money is going to fix them.

>The same way we looked at heroin addiction when it was only black people as ‘tough on drugs, war on crime.’ We have — and when it became white people, we looked at it as a public health crisis, as something that needs to be treated.

Dion was on heroin in the early 60s
So was Dr. John
So was Dee Dee Ramone

white rock stars were dying on it by the late 60s and early 70s

Man with the Golden Arm starred Frank Sinatra as a junkie musician and was made in the 50s.

I don’t know when William S. Burroughs started shooting up but one of his earliest books was Junkie and was published as a paperback in the 1950s.

I’m sure there were WWII vets who came back addicted or who self-medicated after PTSD etc.

So his history is false.

Opiods are killing upwards of 100,000 a year in America including rock stars like Prince and Tom Petty.

But somehow it’s racist to point out that drugs are bad, m’kay.

‘it is a spiritual issue’
The problem is that the only morals that many black and whites have is: anything goes so long as you don’t get caught.
The crime is getting caught.
