People marry into tribes or are adopted by tribes and it becomes their history. The Gauls weren’t Napoleon’s ancestors. He decided they were, despite being Corsican (i.e. Italian) by birth, and no Frenchman is going to tell you that Napoleon wasn’t French. This isn’t even unique to Napoleon. The Normans who ruled England for centuries decided they were English. No one is going to tell you Richard the Lionheart isn’t English, because he’s a frog who couldn’t even speak English.

The problem with Haley is that she’s decided it’s not her history, even though the white people of South Carolina put her in office. She’s decided she’s too good for them. And that’s what makes her irredeemably rotten as a person.
