But in this most divisive of times people should not be re-fighting the Civil War and shaming those whose ancestors fought for the Confederacy. Instead we should look for ways, in Lincoln's words, to bind up the nation's wounds.
F#CK Rich Lowry!
Those Confederates he speaks of were just AMERICANS with a different opinion.
The Confederate politicians and a few rich plantation owners MAY have been fighting to preserve slavery, but the average Confederate Soldier and their officers were fighting for their rights, STATES RIGHTS!
Well, there ARE several statues of my great uncle, who was a Lieutenant General in the Confederacy, so I am a bit miffed. He never owned slaves himself, but his wife’s family did.
I agree; I think we should play DIXI instead, F#CK’EM
F#CK ALL SPORTS THAT CAN’T RESPECT OUR NATIONAL ANTHEM!
It's a different mindset when you're DC centric. Words like honor, courage, and integrity are just words in DC.
I never cared a whit about Jefferson Davis, but that's not the point. This headlong rush to whitewash our history is no different than what the Taliban were doing just a few years ago.
Give them an inch today, they’ll demand a light year tomorrow!
Also never cared for Jeff Davis, and several other leading Confederates.
My family originates in West (by GOD) Virginia and Illinois, we spent the Civil War killing as many of those Piedmont members of our family as we could.
The Illinois part of the family (mom’s) didn’t have a real personal stake in the War Of Northern Aggression, but all of us from West (by GOD) Virginia sure as hell did.
Lots of Cousins, Uncles, Brothers, etc down there in eastern Virginia; for us it was personal.
Regardless of which side of the battle line a man was on; we still need to recognize their Honor, Bravery, Dedication, and Integrity to their States and their cause.
Right or Wrong; These men were all AMERICANS.
The question is-Do we erase history?
Is that a good or bad idea?
(If you look at how Communists cover up history, in order to demoralize citizens, and control them, it looks like a bad idea.)
IMO removing this history takes away from the tremendous acheivements of black Americans, who, despite all the racism and horror inflicted on their people, triumphed and went on to success, and/or even defended our nation.
An example would be the recent decision to remove Aunt Jemima products.
She overcame being a slave, and was America's first black female millionaire.
How can it be good to remove her wonderful story from history?
The first smackdown of Hitler's master race BS, was when Jesse Owens won at the Munich Olympics.
The Tuskegee Airmen fought valiantly in WWII, along with hundreds of thousands of others, in all wars.
What is AMAZING is that they all did these things IN SPITE of the racism they endured.
How will future generations know what black Americans overcame, if slavery and Civil War history is censored, or taken away altogether?
But this is a discussion we need to have with black America, because anyone can see how the statues would be hurtful to them.
However, as you pointed out, the truth might be that the Democrat/Communist party IS NOT for these removals of history because "they care" about blacks, but, because they, (dems), are covering up what they did, and it doesn't matter how much damage they do, or how many get hurt, in the process.
(Then again, this is how the historically racist, corrupt, self serving Democrats operate. How I hope and pray people will wake up to the true nature of the Destructive Democrat party.)
Just my 2 cents
As I understand it, Washington couldn’t free the slaves he owned because it was illegal to do so in Virginia at the time.
This is such BS.
President Trump is right, too, by the way. He must try keep his base cohesive, even though it is like trying to herd cats.
National Review is applying the Taliban argument. "Muslims Should Feel No Investment in Buddhist Monuments."
Rich Lowry!? He cries himself to sleep because Trump beat Jeb Bush.
The veterans of the CSA are, by act of Congress, veterans of the United States of America
This is incorrect. They were veterans of the Civil War. They were never granted status as Veterans of the United States Armed Services. A couple of thousand of their widows were granted a federal pension equal to that of a Union veteran widow. They were give head stones at no cost by the VA, but the head stones are different than those provided to Veterans of the Armed Forces of the United States.
were fighting for their rights, STATES RIGHTS!
What States Rights did the Buchanan Administration violate so badly that secession from the United States was the only answer?
They are "Civil War Veterans" by act of Congress. The rest still applies.
Hey Rich,
F*** you.
Sincerely,
L
Was this the same Chief Justice of the Supreme Court that declared Texas secession illegal in the White v. Texas Supreme Court Case,
Or does his opinion only count when it agrees with yours?
National Rebuke. Nothing American about those assholes.
