Two ex-Minneapolis police officers charged in George Floyd's death cast blame on more senior colleague

Attorneys for two former rookie Minneapolis police officers on Thursday rejected accusations that their clients aided and abetted the killing of George Floyd, casting blame instead on a senior officer who allegedly ignored his younger counterparts.

[snip]

“What is my client supposed to do but follow what the [senior] officer says?” Lane’s attorney, Earl Gray, argued in court. “The strength of this case, your honor, in my opinion is extremely weak.”

Defense attorneys said Kueng, 26, of Plymouth, was working his third shift ever as a full-time officer and Lane, 37, of St. Paul, was working his fourth day as a full-time officer on the day they encountered Floyd.

“At all times Mr. Kueng and Mr. Lane turned their attention to that 19-year veteran …” Plunkett said. “[Kueng] was trying — they were trying to communicate that this situation needs to change direction.”

Charging documents show that Lane asked twice if they should roll Floyd onto his side and was rebuffed by Chauvin. Kueng took Floyd’s pulse and told his colleagues, “I couldn’t find one,” according to the criminal complaint.

It should be pointed out that if a group of non-police civilians detained a criminal (where it is legal to do so) and acted in this way, they would all be in jail on similar if not worse charges, the DA would be pressing hard for no bail and the authorities as a whole would be saying, “This matter is for a jury to settle.”

Why should the police be treated any differently?

Can they buy a bail bond? Wonder how much it is for $1M? Might be safer in jail however.

Not sure, but I think I've heard bail bond is ~10%. $100K is a hefty sum for rookies.

Why do you repeatedly spam these crap rumors on every thread? Your "love triangle" garbage and recent divorce are nothing more than fodder for tabloids.

Chauvin's wife filed for divorce the day he was arrested. This is nothing more than a process to shelter assets before they are forfeited to attorney fees and civil damages.

If the time line is correct, I’m surprised Lane was charged.

The body cams surely have a tale to tell.

I feel bad for Lane. He was holding Floyds legs . Holding his legs didnt kill him 37 yrs old
Twice asked should we roll him over
Previously worked with juveniles. And attempted CPR.

I read some police departments allow it, some don’t. I never thought of border agents. Sort of bad we allow certain actions against citizens, but not illegal immigrants.

“Defense attorneys said Kueng, 26, of Plymouth was working his third shift ever as a full-time officer and Lane, 37, of St. Paul was working his fourth day as a full-time officer on the day they encountered Floyd.”

Two rookie officers were paired together? They were the first to answer the 911 call. Lane decided to cuff Floyd, but needed Kueng assistance. It looked to me that Floyd was resisting arrest. Why did Lane make the decision to cuff Floyd in the first place? They never cuffed the two passengers in Floyd’s car. No one ever talks about them.

A third unnamed officer arrives three minutes later in a park police car #830. He takes a report from Lane, gets back in his car, phones it in, probably looking for priors.

As Lane and Kueng walk Floyd across the street, the third officer, does a U-turn in his car, just enough to block the surveillance camera. But just before he parks, it looks like Lane and Kueng are struggling to get Floyd in the back seat of their car.

At this point, the unnamed officer goes back to Floyd’s car, and the two unnamed passengers, who are sitting outside the car. Although it looks like the male tries to retrieve something from the car.

At this point, Chauvin and Thao show up. It looks like Floyd goes in one side of the back seat of the patrol car, and comes out the other side. At that point, Floyd is pinned down on the ground. It looks like he is resisting arrest to me. But unless someone else has a video, we can’t know for sure what happened. The body cams could provide a lot of unknown evidence, both audio and video.

That unnamed park police officer really dodged a major bullet. But he could provide some evidence in the case.

Of the four mug shots, Lane appears to be the most shaken of the lot. Glad you mentioned his background. Here's the link to a story about their personnel records:

The video and the police reports show him to be the sole voice of reason.

We are not even allowed to tackle someone who is running without having to write a memo for use of force. I am not talking about hurting someone, but someone is running from you out in the middle of no where and performing a controlled take down(what it use to be called). Most people don’t run but if they do these day we can’t do much except maybe ask them to stop.

Most people don’t realize that crossing the border is only a misdemeanor so unless someone assaults you it is not considered appropriate to use force.

A veteran cop with just two rookies for support...
No wonder he made sure he had control of the situation himself!

Yeah, he’s an interesting fellow.

A veteran cop dealing with a doped-up professional violent criminal resisting arrest would need someone to restrain him of he went too far.
Seems the police SOP would have that.

Hopefully not mouth to mouth, or he might have caught the COVID-19 virus (if it's possible from a dead man).

You can't be serious. Communicable diseases have been around since the dawn of time. First responders have access to ambu bags and other personal protection equipment since civilized times. Even before CV-19. Back in the 1980's a disease called HIV/AIDS was recognized. Have you heard of it?

And that veteran cop will have the rest of his life to reflect on his actions that day, his last day as a cop. He went too far.
