According to the criminal complaint: Police were called after Floyd was suspected of passing a fake $20 at the Cup Foods store. Officers Thomas Lane and J Alexander Kueng approached Floyd, who was sitting in a car with two other people. Lane pointed his gun at Floyd, who placed his hands on the steering wheel. Lane returned his gun to the holster and pulled him out of the car. Floyd initially resisted being handcuffed, but once cuffed was compliant. When they tried to put Floyd in their squad car he stiffened and fell to the ground and said he was claustrophobic.

"As Lane, Kueng and Chauvin held down Floyd, Lane asked if they should reposition his body.

“Should we roll him on his side?” Lane asked, according to the charges.

“No, staying put where we got him,” Chauvin responded.

“I am worried about excited delirium or whatever,” Lane said.

“That’s why we have him on his stomach,” Chauvin said."

From various cases, especially Freddie Gray’s in Baltimore, it appears that claiming to have medical problems is not infrequently claimed by experienced criminals to get them on an easier track, and sit for a few hours in an emergency room before they are tested for drugs. That might lead experienced cops to discount the seriousness of claimed medical and breathing problems, which in some cases might be real. No idea if that entered into the Floyd case, and, even if it did, it would be an explanation, not an excuse.

Club owner said it was unlikely they knew each other.

And you believe him? It must of been a very large venue, if he did security for 17 years and they never saw each other.

the carbon monoxide theory (due to proximity to the tailpipe of the cruiser)?

Unlikely on a maintained vehicle with a catalytic converter.

Possible, not probable.

Suuuuure - no way 9 minutes of pressure on a carotid artery - nearly 3 minutes even after he became unresponsive, could have anything to do with it

does Minneapolis jails have reasonable conditions or is it a place with a rep as being particularly bad for blacks?
Yeah and I know no jail is a picnic but some are far worse than others.

And not very likely in any outdoor environment. CO is lighter than air, so it tends to dissipate upwards. And any slight wind will whisk the exhaust away and provide completely fresh air. Watch other cars' exhausts when winter starts hitting - it's constantly drifting in various directions. He might have gotten a couple whiffs, but not nearly enough to do any damage.

The kneeing wasn't the cause of the suspected Excited Delirium. It was a result of the suspected Excited Delirium.

I’m not saying the knee caused any delirium, I’m saying there’s a good chance it cut off blood enough to severely compromise the brain...9 minutes of no/reduced blood flow could cause serious brain trauma...the almost 3 minutes after he became unresponsive sealed the deal...whether he had underlying issues or not.
