In a similar way, face masks are tied to the political conflict over our response to the coronavirus. Those who lean left politically tend to see the virus as a more dire threat; those on the right are more likely to downplay its seriousness or compare it to less deadly strains like the flu, often following the lead of conservative politicians.
Accordingly, masks may be seen as a marker of political loyalty, triggering feelings of us-versus-them. A politically liberal person may assume that someone wearing a mask is on their team, while those who dont wear masks must be Fox News-watching Republicans. The anger they feel is not simply about the mask, but about believing the non-mask wearer is a certain type of person.

My hair and nail salon reopened recently but all the stylists have to wear masks all day. When I asked how it was going, I was told they go into the back room in between clients take off their masks and breathe. Not good for you!
To some it is not political at all, it just makes sense that they don’t want other people’s water droplets that come out of everyone’s mouth hitting them in the face when there is a virus out there that can be quickly deadly.
Yes people can be very insensitive here. But I think that you have misunderstood others here. What they probably meant is that many people wearing masks incorrectly or in inappropriate situations and believing they are protecting themselves or others is a weak MINDED coward. There is nothing funnier than seeing someone driving around alone in their own car wearing their dunce cap on their face instead of their head.
Do they believe they are protecting themselves from themself, or do they think they will be driving through a cloud of germs from a sick person who has traveled the road ahead of them? Do they realize that coronavirus particulate is ten times smaller than the particles found in cigarette smoke and that their dust mask literally gives them about as much protection against the coronavirus alone in their car as bars on a window would protect them from a mosquito?
A lot of people who see this s##t for what it really is, when going into stores that require a face mask for entry let their nose completely exposed so they can breathe properly. I’ve been doing it along with many others from the beginning when Pa. Governer Wolf and his tranny sidekick commanded businesses that were allowed to be open, to enforce his mask edict. No store employees or Karen has ever said a word to me about wearing the mask improperly and I can breathe normally.
That is demonstrated by the lack of concern about sexually transmitted diseases and the deliberate attempt to de-stigmatize HIV and remove the penalties for knowingly spreading it.
As one FReeper says, there’s no reasoning with the unreasonable. And as Mark Twain said: “No amount of evidence will persuade and idiot.” About the only thing the masks do is to slow down the velocity and distance of exhalations by the wearer. Intake? Virus is pretty dang small. Your ‘x-tshirt mask’ ain’t gonna stop it. But there I go being semi-factual. Maybe mount a couple UV lights around our faces? LOL!
They mistake looking good for doing good. Hence the idiots bragging on Twitter about wearing a knit face mask that couldn’t protect against spray paint. And the hysteria for people not wearing masks though jogging alone.
Today it’s a mask to get in a store and tomorrow it’s a vaccine? A vaccine complete with a digital certificate?
It is very strange. I was raised by a Republican Womens club president who was also a nurse. The anti-vaxxers are anathema to the view I grew up with on healthcare and vaccines. The masks seem like a no-brainer to get this over with so we can get this show on the road.
The anti-mask thing seems to be coming from the anti-vaxxer camp. If the anti-vaxxer types are viewed as centrist Republicans and not as refugees from the Hollywood Left, then imo, you are going to have a harder time getting the independents to identify with the GOP. What is particularly galling is that Robert Kennedy, Jr. is the big name proponent of all of this.
Yup. Just saw one the other day walking up the hill in front of the house with mask firmly in place. And two folks in Chilis last night wearing masks. I guess they removed them to eat. Guess they ‘feel’ safer. IDK.
Liberals in general and some conservatives are driven to tell other people what to do all the time.
I’m not sneezing or coughing so I don’t wear a mask. I want to keep breathing properly and stay healthy.
If people are scared we tell to do what they need to do to feel safe. Which works fine except many of them need to order others around in order to fee safe. The problem is, they are scared no matter what we do, so we can’t help them. It’s best to ignore them.
It’s a fact that a healthy person wearing a mask is not good for their health, but there are too many sheep.
Well you are obviously not as ‘nuanced’ at the psyco. LOL! Probably you see reality.
Costo is a PITA. The Midlothian site has a mask Nazi who, throughout the store, rudely demands that the mask must be worn properly. I believe she is Pat.
“Statists love to see all those people slavishly walking around with a face mask, in sheepish obedience.”
This is what one way aisles are about as well. Everything with Rats is an obedience test.
Uh, no thanks. A med I take lowers my auto-immune level so I won’t be getting one thank you very much. :-)
I live in a state that never totally locked down. (Iowa) Masks are the exception here, and life is getting back to relative normal. For example, went to an outdoor fruit and veggie stand, there was one person out of 30 wearing a mask. At the grocery store, maybe 1/3 of the shoppers are wearing masks. Only about 1/2 of the employees are.
But I went to Wisconsin this weekend, which was locked down. I went into a store, and probably 1/2 of the shoppers were wearing masks.
I think the tighter the regulations on the lockdown in a given state were, the more likely people are to wear masks, and more slowly wind down on all this. For the "Free States" like Iowa, people are more likely to already be living a normal life.
The open up ball is rolling quickly here in Iowa. Just the tone on Facebook is way different from my Iowa peeps. The number of lock it down, flatten the curve people have shrunk to almost none. People who were all on that train are now posting pics of them out and about doing stuff, without masks.
People don't want to admit they were wrong. I get that. But the numbers are showing if you weren't near death, you weren't going to die from this. Instead of busting their balls, I welcome them to Team Live Normal.
