I don’t quite know how a faction of conservatism has unfolded have decided that this virus is and was insignificant. I don’t quite get the theory behind the rationale. I understand the motivation. It’s probably guys who have lost a lot of money from not working. They need an explanation that is something other than an event came out of nowhere and smashed your livelihood.

There is also what has become some sort of sequence of splashed statistics that say all sorts of different things. It’s hard to keep track of which statistic makes what point.

I’ve seen other articles talking about the age of victims. It occurs to me that just does not differ all that much from cancer. It’s mostly, not always, a disease of getting old. The same objections are not made about that. I don’t quite see why the age of the afflicted defines something. I suppose what’s being attempted is a measurement of years of life lost to the disease rather than how many lives.

You would see the same thing with cancer. Of course, what’s different about cancer is it is not infectious.

I’m not sure that any conservative asserts that the virus is not serious. It is not clear that it is any more serious than previous Influenza and SARS pandemics. There were no “stay home orders” nor economic shutdowns for any of those pandemics.

By far the most troublesome “conservative factions” are those willing to sacrifice essential liberties for the illusion of safety. It appears that instead of a “give me liberty or give me death” ethos, we now have keyboard conservatives whose motto is “take my liberty as long as I have Netflix, DoorDash and a government check”. It is very sad indeed.

Age is a factor when looked at from an economic viewpoint. There was no reason to lock up our young and healthy work force to protect retired Americans with at least one comorbid health condition.

‘I don’t quite get the theory behind the rationale. ‘

I guess it escaped your notice that governors usurped powers not allotted to them and systematically locked down entire segments of states’ economies, threatening the long term sustainability of supply and demand considerations...
