Navy Secretary Upbraids Aircraft Carrier’s Captain Over Intercom
Wall Street Journal ^ | April 6, 2020 | Lucy Craymer and Ben Kesling

Posted on 04/06/2020 10:49:56 AM PDT by billorites

Acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modly addressed the crew of the USS Theodore Roosevelt on Monday to defend his decision to fire the aircraft carrier’s commander, Capt. Brett Crozier, who wrote a memo last week demanding more urgent action to address an outbreak of coronavirus.

According to a recording of the address and descriptions by relatives of crew members and by U.S. officials, Mr. Modly delivered the remarks to the crew of the ship, which is now docked in Guam as crew members undergo a quarantine because of the Covid-19 outbreak. More than 150 of the approximately 5,000 members of the crew have tested positive.

The remarks, over the vessel’s public address system, were tinged with profanity, according to the recording and the descriptions of the remarks, with Mr. Modly saying that sailors were expected to “keep their shit together and take care of each other.” At another point, Mr. Modly, addressing fears over the virus, said: “If the ship was in combat and there were hypersonic missiles coming at it, you’d be pretty f------ scared too.”

Many crew members on the Roosevelt were critical of the Navy’s decision to fire Capt. Crozier, who drew cheers and applause from sailors as he walked off the ship’s gangplank last week for the last time. President Trump has backed the decision to fire the commander.

But Mr. Modly, referring to Capt. Crozier in his remarks Monday, said: “If he didn’t think, in my opinion, that this information wasn’t going to get out into the public, in this information age we live in, then he was either too naive or too stupid to be a commanding officer of a ship like this.”

“The alternative is he did this on purpose, which is a serious violation” of military law, he said.

If the Navy Secretary is so concerned about the chain of command, why isn’t he letting uniformed officers over Captain Crozier handle this? He’s a jerk not worthy of his position, either too naive or stupid to be there at the Pentagon. I would almost bet my mortgage that this outburst comes back to bite the SecNav in the butt.

This “address” was “speaking truth to power”. About time our military departments were shaken up, cleaned out of Obama PCers and fools (i.e. SecNav Mabus of Obama), and told to shape up or ship out of the service.

West Point Military Academy is in bad shape, with teachers who are weak, leftists, incompetent, or just plain stupid.
That is a story that a major conservative news body (TV, print, radio) needs to investigate. Worse than you could ever know.

Why is it that no one seems to be asking the former captain how the heck his crew became infected?

Was liberty granted at a port with known cases? If so, the captain should have had to walk the plank!

I would be very interested in how the virus got on board.

I have no problems with a “this is what we do and this is what is required” type message. However, praise in public, punish in private.

Comments about the prior Captain should have been left out.

Listen up fucktards! All you people who think Sec Nav was inappropriate. I am a retired Navy Chief Corpsman who at one time was the Leading Chief of the world’s Largest Combat Ship Medical Dept. aboard an LHD Amphibious Assault Ship. 1/4 bigger than a Nimitz class carrier Med Dept. Fully Loaded, we had 3500 Marines & Sailors on a ship the size of a WWII Essex Class Carrier. If you think for 1 micro sec that I could not devise a safe and workable plan to isolate 150, 200, 300, 400, 500 or more people, keep them treated, fed, & safe, and tested the rest of the crew in a scenario like this, and still keep that ship operational until it reached a safe port of call, then I never should have been given Chief’s Anchor’s to wear. This Capt, either by stupidity or design, FUCKED UP BIG TIME!! He needs to be Court Marshaled immediately! And any member of that crew that can’t handle it needs to be replaced NOW! YES THEY CAN BE REPLACED! ALL OF THEM! It just takes the backbone to do so. I doubt the entire crew liked this guy however, and there are many in the crowd who still have balls. The Sec Nav was right on the MARK!! You don’t EVER ADVERTISE to the World your state of readiness while underway, PERIOD!! This is THE UNITED STATES NAVY!! And FUCK EVERYONE OF YOU LITTLE MONKEY FUCKERS WHO CAN”T HANDLE STRAIGHT TALK< GO CRY ME A RIVER YOU BED WETTING SHITS!!

Or not inland on the Gulf Coast of FL— not in some “gated” community....dayum Yengues fo’ shoh.

Can’t discount the “outliers” even in GA, however. Generations of true Southerners in Hawkinsville, GA.... with license plates on their caddies which say “Shalom, Y’all”.

I’ve read (here) a week or so ago that the group did a port call in Vietnam just prior to the Kung Flu detection aboard.

It was said the other day the ship made a pot-of-call in Vietnam and that is where the virus was found.

If a crew likes their CO it usually means he breaks the rules to be liked.

Bingo!!
That was my take when I first heard, "he was beloved by the crew".
I was on Navy ships where I liked the CO, but primarily I respected them FIRST!
I was a Quartermaster and worked directly with the CO and XO, (Tin Can Navy), and had officers I respected and enjoyed working with, but can not think of a single line officer I considered, "Beloved" by the crew.

They are in port hopefully getting the needed medical care.
Maybe the Navy brass will not just for spite.

I think he was sending a message to the senior officers of the Navy as well as the crew.

Navy O-6 retired here. You’re the kind of Chief that is the backbone of the Navy. Would have been honored to have served with you.

Needless to say, I concur with everything you said.
