The Quinism Foundation Warns of Dangers from Use of Antimalarial Quinolines Against COVID-19

Use of Chloroquine, Hydroxychloroquine, Mefloquine, Quinine, and Related Quinoline Drugs Risks Sudden and Lasting Neuropsychiatric Effects from Idiosyncratic Neurotoxicity

The Quinism Foundation has warned of a risk of sudden and lasting neuropsychiatric effects from the use of antimalarial quinolines against COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, and has urged policy makers, physicians, and members of the public to be alert to such effects.

“The same endosomotropic properties that likely underlie the effectiveness of quinoline antimalarial drugs such as chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine against the virus may also underlie their dangers, ” said Dr. Remington Nevin, MD, MPH, DrPH, a Johns-Hopkins trained psychiatric epidemiologist and drug safety expert and former U.S.

Army public health physician, who now serves as Executive Director of The Quinism Foundation. “These are not safe drugs.”“In susceptible individuals, these drugs act as idiosyncratic neurotoxicants, potentially causing irreversible brain and brainstem dysfunction, even when used at relatively low doses,” said Dr. Nevin.

“This drug-induced dysfunction causes a disease of the brain and brainstem called quinoline encephalopathy, or quinism, which can be marked acutely by psychosis, confusion, and risk of suicide, and by lasting psychiatric and neurological" symptoms.

“Symptoms of chronic quinoline encephalopathy include tinnitus, dizziness, vertigo, paresthesias, visual disturbances, nightmares, insomnia, anxiety, agoraphobia, paranoia, cognitive dysfunction, depression, personality change, and suicidal thoughts, among others, ” said Dr. Nevin.

“Particularly among military veterans, in whom these drugs have been widely used for decades as prophylactic antimalarials, these symptoms can mimic and be mistaken for those of post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury.”

Have a very close friend with autoimmune issues and a host of other conditions and she takes these same drugs (along with several others).

She is as fine as fine can be for someone in her situation.

Listen to the 50 seconds of disclaimers on any of the goofy-named patent drugs advertised incessantly on Fox News and compare.

Oh - those drugs are ok because they cost hundreds of dollars.

Got it.

The Quinism Foundation seems fishy to me too. Perhaps they are spreading Chinese misinformation or working for the DemonRATs to undermine Trump’s efforts to stop the outbreak. Let’s wait for the clinical tests and hope that hydroxycholoroquine combined with azithromycin will stop COVID-19 dead in its tracks.

Use them only for treatment, not for long term preventative use.

No one told us that in SEA in the 60's. They were dispensed regularly right along with the salt pill.

But if Obama had suggested it during the swine flu, he would have been awarded the Noble Prize for Medicine. We’re sick of these obviously planted Leftist attacks on everything the President does.

Cure worse than disease or disease worse than cure?

Gotta die of something.

“Hydroxychloroquine... is on the World Health Organization’s List of Essential Medicines, the safest and most effective medicines needed in a health system”.

Hydroxychloroquine was approved for medical use in the United States in 1955.[2] It is on the World Health Organization’s List of Essential Medicines, the safest and most effective medicines needed in a health system.[6] The wholesale cost in the developing world is about US$4.65 per month as of 2015, when used for rheumatoid arthritis or lupus.[7] In the United States the wholesale cost of a month of treatment is about US$25 as of 2020.[8] In the United Kingdom this dose costs the NHS about £ 5.15.[9]In 2017, it was the 128th most prescribed medication in the United States with more than five million prescriptions.[10]

[[They didn’t list the percentages of people who took it long term that had problems. I didn’t see any short tern usage numbers either. ]]

Precisely- regarding the use of quinine, the condition is very rare- sure, it can happen, and can even happen with just a dose or two- to some people, but for the vast majority of people it won’t- quinine has helped millions upon millions of people, an it has a very long track record- Yes, it’s not perfect- but my goodness, it’s close-

Hospitals buying up all of the chloroquine.

They must think it’s gonna work.

Providers have been purchasing significant amounts of chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine in anticipation that they will be used to treat COVID-19, drastically depleting available supply, according to a new report from Premier.

While the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is still investigating whether the inexpensive, old anti-malaria drugs can tame symptoms and limit the spread of the highly contagious virus, hospitals have responded to clinical trials in other countries that have shown promising results.

Orders of chloroquine spiked 3,000% in March, according to data from Premier, the group purchasing and consulting organization. From January 2019 through February 2020, hospitals ordered an average of 149 units a month. More than 2,300 units were ordered through March thus far.

“FDA Commissioner Dr. Stephen Hahn, said in prepared remarks. “We also must ensure these products are effective; otherwise we risk treating patients with a product that might not work when they could have pursued other, more appropriate, treatments.””

So where is their list of “...other, more appropriate, treatments...” ?

The sheeple are expendable, just follow the money! Fity years of use for this drug. A proven safe treatment that is too cheap to be tolerated.

Of course “someone” comes out against using these antiviral drugs... Might take the sting out of the left’s pet project to hurt the President. They need to keep stoking the fear and holding down the economy. Can’t have anything going against their narrative. Must discredit use of these drugs...

agree-if you are at risk of dying these side effects are nothing much, many drugs currently administered, sedatives, etc are linked to possible delusions. remember that is possible. We need to have a cure now, the suicide hotlines are swamped due to so many people losing their job

"a risk of sudden and lasting neuropsychiatric effects from the use of antimalarial quinolines"

Unless they restrict prescription to non-democrats, those side effects may be undetectable.

Do you need to take this drug for 5 years to cure the Cornovirus? I hope not.. Might go blind in 10 years or die in 10 days? Better not take the drug..
