We’re the directors of Alaska’s emergency rooms. It’s time to shut down nonessential air travel
Anchorage Daily News ^ | 3/20/2020 | Opinion

We believe the time to shut down any non-essential out-of-state travel is now. We also believe restrictions on in-state travel, especially to remote communities, should be considered.

In the past few days, Alaska has started to see multiple positive tests for coronavirus. All were related to out-of-state travel. Most were related to travel to the Lower 48. With a large influx of state residents returning from spring break, we will see many more positive tests in the next week, and soon — if not already — experience significant community spread.

The state of Alaska has taken appropriate measures, closing bars, restaurants and other spaces people congregate, encouraged social distancing and asked residents who have traveled Outside in the past 14 days to self-isolate. Alaska’s medical providers have been directed to avoid direct patient contact if they have traveled within 14 days. Hospitals have been directed to cancel all elective procedures to protect the ability to manage COVID-19 patients and still manage our normal caseload of acutely ill or injured patients. Our resources are limited, and we are geographically isolated from any realistic overload capacity.

The comment on ADN.com are usually terrible, full of hateful back and forth between the 2 sides. I scrolled through the ones on this article and could not believe how many agreed with it. Way more than the few doubters who mainly didn’t seem to think it was legal.

Alaska is in a really unique position geographically: we can do this. Sure it will hurt, we are already hurting w/ schools shut and businesses closed. But this is a chance to really stop this epidemic in its tracks, along with testing and contact tracing.

I full support closing Alaska to all non essential travel.

Yup. Alaska is one of the places where this thing could be beaten down before it gets out of hand.

Note the mention of "spring break" returnees.

I figured the spring break thing in Florida would eventually come back to bite us with something health wise.

I have nothing against some revelry and debauchery, but when you collect folks from all over the country in one big petri dish, and they then spread out all over the continent, you are asking for trouble.

Yeah, same with cruises - jam that many people in one place and if there’s something contagious, it’s gonna spread. And that’s not even factoring in all the bodily fluid exchanges between strangers during Spring breaks.

Yeah, same with cruises

Which is one reason I have zero interest to go on a cruise ship.

The minute you step on board, you surrender your freedom to the captain of the ship and circumstances with no ability to walk away.

I figured the spring break thing would spread some super STD with, as you mentioned, the bodily fluid swaps.

neighbor that lives 300 yards from me just came back (last fri) from Italy and Switzerland. Now who would go to Italy to see ski races 3 weeks ago? 60 year old flower child dem that hasn't got sick yet. He should have come home to find it as embers

waiting for the snow to melt in Fairbanks.

My wife and I have a trip planned for April 6 thru 17th to Alaska, our town is doing social distancing right now, we don’t know if airlines will cancel our flights yet, we have businesses shutting down until 30th March, how long are your businesses shutting down?

Being on a cruise ship is like being in prison with a risk of drowning.

Hadn’t thought about that - CV19 mingling with a common STD - if it can. Would make the AIDS epidemic look like a Sunday stroll in the garden.

Actually a good month past time to shut down domestic US flights. Two months past time to have shut down international travel.

This is retarded. This virus has been a hoax and yet these idiots call for yet another segment of the American economy to shutdown. I say we just shut down the hospitals these guys serve and toss them out of their jobs.

Stay home, might get stuck here. Of course maybe it is a hoax, but I wouldn't bet the farm on it.

Everything is starting to shut down, people who can work from home do, and restricted-short hours everywhere. limits and empty shelves at Fred Meters, Costco, Walmart. Indians are starting to not permit people to get off bush planes in rural villages to prevent spread.

almost all of our 12 cases came from people flying into Alaska over the last week.

I have quite a few Indian friends. Their ancestors village was wiped out during Spanish flu. 32 families only two families survived. Reason, those two families were halfbreeds and their white relatives got medicine and food to them; true story. Indians believe this is for real.

For how long? There may be someone who gets it in a week, month? How long should we shut down?

Alaska should be like a country within a country. You need a visa to come here, and need to have a reason, and pass a covid19 test.

Hawaii is also considering closing to non-essential travel.
